When I had the Maser serviced last year, the Indy (hi Tim, I suspect he's reading this) I used said he had a Gallardo coming in.

It has now appeared on here...

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/l...

I popped around when it arrived, but it had been stood for a couple of years and was a bit in need of TLC and removal of cobwebs.

There were a few bits not quite tidy, the little cover over the driver door handle was broken off (still missing in the pics), one of the keys needed coding, but it has been gone through now so should be OK

The plus sides are...

1) it is orange
2) it is manual
3) it is around the corner
4) The cash is earning bugger all so it makes the finance cost about £60/month by my man maths.
5) The Mrs says I can have it.
6) It comes with a warranty.
7) "It has to be a sure fire future classic dear, can't lose, manuals are rare, sure to go up in value."

The downsides are
1) "You said that when we bought the Maserati" (at least I was right about her Z4M coupe)
2) We've nowhere to keep it (so that's £100/month expense straight away)
3) The Mrs won't get rid of the Maser or her Beemer, so I need to justify 4 cars,
which leads to
4) I was intending to retire this year and can't do that with 2 Expensive Italian Follies to run.

Anyone any comments - go for it, run away, buy mine instead, etc?

Retirement or a 12 year old Gallardo I might use occasionally and costs me a fortune to maintain.

Mmmm that took me all of 2 seconds to decide - RETIREMENT

Is there really any sense to be had in this situation?

For me the biggest thing that stands out is your retirement. How much do you want it?
Are you hanging out for retirement or are you enjoying work and happy to go on?

Also i know you have fallen in love because you are asking the other Gallardo people if you should do it.
Thats like asking the pope if you should pray...

OP. How much do you hate your job? That's the nub of it, surely. Personally, I quite like what I do so I'm not in a hurry to retire and I like the little luxuries that work affords me. In contrast, a mate of mine has just retired from a job he absolutely despised. Now he just loafs around. He hasn't got as much money to spend, but he's content. Wouldn't be for me, though. I'd choose work and a supercar. You might, too?

I'm not one of the "experts" having only recently asked similar pro/con questions myself before resolving to go for it. I think once the idea gets in one's head it is hard to shake...

This car is a bit of an outlier in terms of price (low-ish) despite some positives such as colour and relatively rare manual. There has got to be a reason for that. The reasons have potential to seriously undermine "7) "It has to be a sure fire future classic dear, can't lose, manuals are rare, sure to go up in value.".

From my (relatively uninformed) perspective, 41,000 miles seems high-ish....even moreso when you say it has been stood for a few years. Worth thinking about especially if you want to enjoy/drive as well and not just keep in garage.

One thing I don't know about is the extent to which aftermarket exhaust is a bad thing but it is something to consider. I know when we recently had this come up as an issue on our 996 Turbo due to (OEM) GT2 wing. I have no idea if Lamborghini buyers are the same but could be a "thing" if you are banking on future classic status.

I say go for it unless you are aching to retire. But, if you are going to go for it might it be worth looking around and maybe stretching a bit more on budget for a bit lower mileage and/or fewer "cobwebs" option?

A bit higher price doesn't actually add to much more when stretched over finance period. Maybe if you only care about enjoying for yourself the lower end of the market may provide a bargain opportunity. But, sometimes things are cheap for a reason and will end up costing more over time. And, while there is no certainty you won't lose money, you can be reasonably certain you won't lose too much with a really good car even if you pay a bit more. If you are banking on not losing too much or maybe coming out ahead you could shoot yourself in the foot going for the cheapest option.

I'd put retirement off for another couple of years and go for a LP. Much better machine and likely to cost less to maintain. If you can afford it don't worry about the total cost, when you sell you should get the difference back as the prices are pretty solid at the mo. If you intend on keeping it then that's another matter.

I can't quite see the plate but I think it might be LJ05JJK? If so it used to be owned by PHer justin220. Perhaps he might be able to give you some more information?

Buy it, keep it over the summer, enjoy it, test the water on monthly cost, the wife may come to love it, if you decide it's not for you sell it in the autumn you're not likely to lose on it, might even make your storage costs back.

Thanks for all the replies- it does sort of focus you when you see things written down. It really is a head over heart decision with these things - at least the Maser was a simpler choice as it is a practical proper 4 seater and therefore almost the logical choice when I replaced the V70.

My mum took poorly last week and whilst she is OK and staying with my sister for a few days, she's about 5 hours away and I can't get back up for a fortnight (completing a house sale early next week so need to go and clear it this weekend), so it did make me realise that time is more important than cash.

FWIW I hate my current job, got an application out elsewhere for part time but if I don't get it then I will pack this in come Summer. Whilst I like the idea of a Gallardo, the wife's Z4M is perfectly adequate for some quiet enjoyment and I can always hire a Gallardo for a weekend or 2 for the cost of storage and service.

Will - good spot on the plate - I think you are correct.

On the other hand I do have the cash from a house sale coming through next week wink

Looks a nice enough car. (I have an 04)

Early cars have expensive suspension if/when! it needs doing so price up some parts on Eurospares to get a feel.

Get a proper inspection (location is an issue I guess with this one).

Get a bore scope inspection. CATs can disintegrate and score the cylinders.

If it checks out then go for it. You'll be dead a long time smile
