Could you describe the problems you've experienced?
why dont you start with fixing the scrolling problem on the pages . Other websites doesn't need you to click on the page to be able move up or down .
For example click on classifieds and that page opens , presspage down to access the part of the classifieds you want to look at and nothing happens . So you have to move the pointer toclick on the page somewhere without an add or an option . Page moves down and you choose whatever you wanted . Next page appears and that's stuck too , no instant scrolling so it's move the pointer again to a clear part , click next page and you've guessed it , more bloody clicking to move it .
Infuriating isn't the word .

Although if I tried to upload raw images from my DSLR (or even for that matter at times from my iPhone) using my often crappy upload bandwidth I'd be there forever, so it's a balancing act between those two things.
But if people want to spend hours uploading excessively large images, that's their perogative. You still need to process them so that YOUR users get a good experience.

It is possible to describe the issues without being so angry. In amongst all the vitriol is a useful report on a bug (albeit one we already have logged) which will be fixed in the next few weeks.

Thank you.

A large picture from my D30 is going to take 32 seconds upload on "slow" home broadband

That's a fair point. We would respectfully venture that spending a couple of minutes reducing the size first makes for a quicker experience (and we're far from alone in putting an upper limit on image size, even amongst automotive classified sites) but I can't disagree with the fundamental logic of what you're saying.

If I could chime in here, we do process them on our end. If someone uploads a 5MB image to us, we process it to around ~100 KB.

How are you processing them because something is clearly affecting the image quality.

I think the main problem with the new system is it is based on the fact that most users are good with computers

Im not and simply cant be bother resizing pics etc when other websites you just simply upload as they are ,

I dont have the time or the knowlage to mess about , I want the process to be as simple as it can possibly be , Like pistonheads once was

Now it far to much hassle

There's a risk when developing these kind of systems of the tail wagging the dog - i.e. the technical processes and preferences influencing the user experience negatively.

The user requirements for image upload are pretty straightforward:

- simple to browse for one or more images
- indication of progress while uploading
- agnostic to image size
- resizes images and creates thumbnails
- retains image quality
- retains aspect ratio
- does not attempt to enlarge images

Obviously resizing images has quality challenges, but whatever PH is doing to them seems to be affecting them more than you'd expect. Simplistically setting the JPG quality to 6 instead of leaving it at 12.

I think that there are two separate issues here Miniman. It's already noted that the quality seems to be degraded by the new image processor, which we're looking at.

The second issue is the principle of having to resize. RS500 Registrar - I've just taken myself through the process on eBay and they have MUCH stricter regulations on images. We do require an image smaller than 5mb (which is itself not a small size at all) but eBay wanted me to resize so that my image was smaller than "height times width must be smaller than 1600 pixels." I'm reasonably computer literate, but found this baffling.

Now it may be that they have more intuitive tools for traders than this, but I don't have a trade account. Is this the case?

Why bother with a 5MB limit if you are going to squash them to 80K?

Even Autotrader (in the first pic) does a does a much better job 1024x768, 170KB

What image mangler are you using?

I don't know the answer to that but, as I've said a few times now, we are going to look at this in more detail soon. So let's park it as an issue for now. We're aware of the problem, and we're going to look at improving it. I'll update this thread when we've done that.

Usually this time of the evening I would be browsing the classifieds with a beer, sadly no longer..

You see, I howled as loud as the next man at the original new classifieds. But now they work properly, I just don't see why they are harder to browse.

Should be. Everything looks fine on your account so I'll have a further look tomorrow...

Hmm. I may have gone straight from edit photos to preview and missed that step. Will try again tomorrow.

Have to say I've gotten used to the new format now. It's ok. It doesn't have the same simplicity as before but I think that comes with the ads everywhere and smaller fonts. But it is free to browse and most profit led free websites are stacked with adverts. Plus the change isn't 'that' different so all in all I think it's fine.

There is just the header advert on the images when you make them bigger that annoys but I understand that is on the list of being fixed.

Only question from me... What's happened to the mobile site? Sorry if it's been covered already. I miss the ability to idly browse on the iphone whilst in Trap 2.

Ta!
