i've noticed on the desktop version there's a new masthead which is loading a lot slower than the rest of the site so it causes a forum topic to jump a lot.

If you go to a topic after a second the new masthead appears which pushes the page down and in doing so jumps.

Surely the masthead needs to load before topic?

Maybe they could just get rid of it.

Pointless addition.

Or is it just a case of someone in the office needing something to do to justify there wages?

What's a masthead? All I see is about two inches of dead white space at the top of every page above the PH logo. I thought it might be my adblocker causing it, but it looks the same in a different browser with no adblocker running.

It's the top navigation below the big white space

Well this has gone well hasn't it? Looks like the "new" nav is being called in after page load. Why it isn't even aligned correctly speaks volumes, once again.

Hi all - thanks for your feedback, we'll be logging it all and sending it over to dev, then once the test has finished we can take a look at the feedback and sort the issues.

The navigation bar was added so that users could get to other parts of the site that they may not even know existed! Adding this lets users go to editorial, see what events are going on, browse the classifieds etc. so we think it's a very long over due addition smile The test is running for a random 50% of members, so don't worry if you can't see it, and will be ongoing for a week or two.

Cheers,

Jack

Just because you're firing it in with A/B (Maxymiser?) doesn't mean it should break the page and layout!

I'd be lying if I said I knew what testing software we're using so I can't comment on that, but agree it shouldn't be breaking other things - although this is PH, so things go ping unexpectedly. Fear not, it won't go live until the bugs are fixed.

Surely if people are seeing the new banner, without opting in to it, even if it is only 50% of members it is live...

Hi Jack,

I'm guessing the A/B testing is done via the persons cookie. Would you mind asking them which cookie it's on so i can edit it and remove myself from the test.

As a heavy user of the forum it's really driving me up the wall.

Bit of feedback from my point of view, as I was served with the masthead all of yesterday but I'm back to normal today.

Your "improvement" caused extended page load times and a number of page not responding errors. When you put that alongside the flash based banner adverts, that sometimes get loaded 3 times on the same page, it made the page load times even longer, vastly increased the cpu / memory draw on my laptop and made it impossible to have more than 2 pages / threads open at one time.

Back to today without the supposed improvement and page load times are quick, there's hardly any memory draw and I've got numerous threads open at once in different tabs without issue. Also worth noting that's even with the adverts still being served, so clearly something related to the new "masthead" alongside the flash based banner adverts was causing the issues.

Anyone sufficiently hacked off with this half-arsed A/B test using Adblock Plus can kill it by blocking

tags.tiqcdn.com

in custom settings in Adblock.

Is this a large file?

I am GB limited so keep an eye on what I use. I'm 1GB (25%) ahead of where I would expect to be!

I reckon it must be as if you scroll over any part of it it loads numerous flashy menus and countless pictures that link to their all important "news" stories on the front page. The same front page that everyone tries to avoid because of the countless extra adverts banghead

I'm back to being served this stty "improvement" today and as a result the site is once again rendered unusable due to all the fking script errors and page not responding errors that are the end result of it being loaded banghead

Is this still in test mode?
My vote would be to get rid of it.
