There's a few factors at play:
- Poor debating technique/lack of intelligence. When some posters can't think of a rational counterpoint to a contribution they resort to insults (sometimes slightly hidden, sometimes just bad language) and misrepresentation etc. Rather than actually understand an argument some just prefer to try and rubbish someone else by screaming racist/sexist/whateverist/snowflake etc at them regardless of whether there is any factual basis for doing so in their posts.
- Topics in NP&E are more emotive and closely held than in other areas of the site. Most sane people are prepared to politely disagree on the merits of forced induction versus natural aspiration but have rather stronger feelings about immigration/culture/politics/political correctness/wars etc.
- Anonymity. I don't post anything on the internet I wouldn't say to anyones face in public, many don't follow that guideline.
- There is also a collective belief amongst all of us but particularly strongly those who follow the PC trend and/or who are on the liberal/left side of the political spectrum that they hold the ineffable moral high ground and that any disagreement is inherently wrong and immoral.

There needs to be equivalency when banning a poster.
I was banned for stating I had bought a clapped out 944 off eBay and embellished over 3 day’s. Lots of posters got irrate about it and we’re beyond rational in their responses. Some of those 4 years after the fact keep digging it up again and again or follow me and post onto threads I’ve posted on simply to have their s
ts and giggles. I got a months ban which was for telling lies about buying a car which I didn’t and carried it on.
Now I’ve seen people lie and carry on since - without even the post deleted let alone a ban. Also the posters which followed me round appeared to believe that all and Sundry speak non but the truth online..... hmm oh yes that’s reality isn’t it.
The rules need to be equal to all and policed equally otherwise you are discriminating for some reason against one type of poster for some type of reason.

It's impossible to imagine what these people think they'll achieve by arguing across various parts of the forum. What's the point?
I think that a major cause of PH's problem with trolling and petty squabbling in recent years is the lack of any real management of the forum. There's no one involved in setting standards or pointing out when things get out of hand. Due to I guess a lack of resources and decent staff it's been left to look after itself and unfortunately the idiots are taking over. The volunteer mods to their best but are often hopeless, so hopefully the third-party ones will be more effective otherwise things will only get worse.

Being a (reasonably) impartial poster in NPE with fairly floating political views, it seems to me that a lot of the bad feeling towards "it" as a forum is slightly skewed. There seem to be a hardcore of posters with fairly right-wing views, a reasonable chunk of whom I suspect are returning banned members. So you're probably only talking of a handful of individuals. Some of these people clearly believe what they believe, some like to follow the more sensational ones, and others are obviously trolls.
Unfortunately, this means that the posters with slightly right-of-centre views get lumped into the "zomg fascist Nazi" bucket(I see one poster here has already used the phrase "Stormfront-Lite" which is just amazingly hyperbolic) even though their viewpoints by themselves aren't radical at all. These people then get the hump with the name-callers and it all kicks off, and yet another promising thread is ruined forever, with the overall misguided impression that NPE is some hotbed of racism and bigotry.
The absence of a lot of immediate criticism of extreme posters doesn't necessarily mean we are all in tacit agreement with them. I tend to roll my eyes as some of the guff posted, especially the idiotic posts in the "Does your partner know how much you earn" thread, and simply move onto another thread.
I think the issue is much smaller than it appears to be. The problem with all these things though is that it's very subjective. One man's Stormfront is another man's political heaven, with the majority falling in a nebulous lump in the middle.

If I might make an observation, Gavia, you're still relatively new* to PH but I can recall even when your name first started appearing, from the off your frequent approach was to argue with or talk down the other poster, and that continues to this day. It does seem to be your general (note I said general, not exclusive) approach; perhaps taking a look at yourself would keep you out of so many fights and make your life easier here.
