Normally I'd agree with that, but last week a woman blew up the Tardis. Totally destroyed it. I loved that police box... since I was a kid. And that was a long time ago... Although not in a galaxy far far away. I mean she'd only been handed the keys 30 seconds before for chrise sake..... RDMcG said:
Over the years I have noticed a pattern of response to a number of recurring posts:
- I was speeding
- Had an accident
-had or having an affair
-OH left
-committed a crime
In general, when the unwise come to PH for advice, the response is not advice but a lynch mob that builds up in fury to macerate the OP who then disappears, leaving the PH posse to polish its spurs for having run the miscreant out of town. Let's face it, the idiot deserved an even worse fate than the courts assessed and probably should have been stoned.
I wonder why people do this.
I think the problem is in how other people interpret subjective topics - something from a post gets picked up that provokes an emotional reaction in people replying to the thread that perhaps other people don't see or interpret differently. I don't think there are any rules/reasons to this process, but I've tried to come up with some examples of angles that might be taken by people dishing out lynchings on subjects highlighted by the OP:- I was speeding
- Had an accident
-had or having an affair
-OH left
-committed a crime

- I was speeding
I was caught speeding but don't believe what I was doing was dangerous and hence doesn't deserve punishment - cue emotional reaction pointing out to thread starter that irrespective of what they think, the law is nice and clear.
- Had an accident
There are some details you have left out that mean we cannot rule out you doing something wrong - hence the internet will side against you if you don't acknowledge this as a possibility or can't successfully explain why it isn't possible.
-had or having an affair
I've got myself into a mess doing something I know is wrong but am only bothered by that now there are some negative consequences materialising - original thread seems to lack sincerity, that's always a good one to be judgemental about.
-OH left
There is something you did to drive them away that you are not telling the internet about. - I've not convinced myself this is a legit emotional reaction for someone to start a lynching. I'd be interested to see if anyone's got an example of a thread like this where the OP came in for a lynching.
-committed a crime
As per affair
So someone starts a thread and people in internet-land develop emotional reactions based on their own (subjective) interpretation of the post's subtext. Other people reading the thread may infer other subtexts and not pick up on why someone appears to be getting lynched for no apparent reason.
Ultimately, there's usually no right or wrong for any of this behaviour (some reasons may seem more justifiable than others, e.g. comments about person not paying money to other PH members), however the internet/world would be a better place if people were nicer to each other. So I'm going to try and be nice and hope enough people do too!
edit: forgot to quote my favourite post on this thread (so far):

Aye, Health is the right place for advice if you've lost your knob.Edited by Jag_luvver on Tuesday 2nd January 21:56

Who remembers the days PHers would have gone around there to try to help find the car

Those topics only turn into a lynching when they fail to take fair criticism on the chin.
- Speeding - Only when a multiple of the limit, e.g. 60+ in 30 zone, our loved ones might meet them one day.
- Accident - Only if they seek to shift the blame, they may crash into me one day.
- Affair - If the victim they get sympathy, but If caught they need to take it on the chin like a man and don't cry here like a girl
- Divorce - Generally sympathy and advice
- Crime - OK, if they show some contrition otherwise

I'm not sure that one counts as a proper lynching thread tbh. Have you seen some of the OP's recent posting history? Sounds very much like either a banned PH'er that returned under another account or one of the many bored PH'ers that have numerous accounts they post from.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The OP's clearly just an attention we and throughout the course of the day various posters have given him exactly what he wanted. He even admits it more than once about referencing being bored at work, nearly home time, back on Monday, etc.

Reading the last 3 or so pages (after I posted in this thread), the OP returned and appeared to actively encourage the pack.
I don't think he came on to troll the forum, it didn't go the way he hoped & is taking the response in good spirits. I think if he had been trolling his replies would have been more indignant.

Saaby's white knighting must take up an awful lot of his time.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?
I feel sorry for the OP, that thread must be taking up a lot of his time! He should just stop replying!
