Links n pics??

Am I just being a total prat....but why can't I post links and pics very well?? I think I'm following the code advice (ie typing [url] text|link [/url])...but mine come on screen with the [url] business visible. And I've got a site to host pics on, but its all pants.
Rather embarrassed at my own failings....please help

The [ url ] text | address [ /url ]
does work, but it seems to have trouble if the URL contains certain characters that often occur in URLs - like ~ and ,
As has been said - in this case, just use the url itself and it will automatically get hyperlinked.
