Again the sound of "why don't we just rebuild in something not so bespoke" rings in one's ears.

The time and money being spent to patch this up can't be insignificant.

Is it really credible that an external pen tester would have updated data? Either a company with no experience was chosen to do the work, or more likely it was a hack that no one wants to admit..

Yes very credible. Daft but credible. Especially if they thought they were working on a dev rather than prod.

May have even known it was Prod, I've had similar conversations with customers
