We used to start new volumes of forum threads around the 10k post mark due to them supposedly getting a bit wobbly around that threshold.

This has been in place for a very long time, but we've actually made significant tech upgrades behind the scenes over the years, where this may not be necessary anymore.

As a result we're going to leave threads open that are due a new volume. We know there is some excitement around new volumes being created, but they're actually a bad experience as any new volume isn't automatically added to your My Stuff, so if you're not a regular on a thread, you may miss the new volume entirely.

We'll see how it goes but if you start to experience any issues with a long running thread, then please let us know.

What about banned posters?

Normally, posting privileges are returned to those naughty people upon the opening of a new volume and who’ve only been banned from that particular thread as opposed to a site wide or sub-forum wide ban.

Will they now be forever in the wilderness, never to delight us with their ‘views’ on a particular thread?

Seems to me some just reappear with a new ID. Almost impossible to tell these days, though.

I am banned from "Great Canal Journeys". When I asked when the ban would be lifted, I was told 'not until some considerable time after the end of time'.

For goodness sake!

I only said they were a soppy pair?

I think you have confused soppy and soapy? Unless that’s a distant parrot call I can hear over my washing machines spin cycle.

They will remain banned from a thread. From our experience if they've been banned from one volume, they almost certainly end up being banned from the next one too.

Yes very good.
Shame though being banned from the site means sod all to some.

The 500 page changeover was a good way of beginning again with a summary of the previous 500.

Have to say I am impressed you are improving what's in place rather than looking to move to something else. The backend must be a clusterfk. Very few sites maintaining their own message boards now.

Excellent.

In some of the more controversial threads it takes a while to settle back down as the returned banees make themselves known once again.

Good move. Hope the hamsters can handle it.

It would appear we have found the new limit before things start to get a bit flakey, so we will be reverting back to starting new volumes.

We'll be raising the thread limit from 10k posts to 20k posts, so for those that view the forums with a 20 posts per page view, this will also get around the limitation where you can't enter a four-digit page number to skip to a different page.
