Sigs and avatars suck IMO, one of the biggest attractions of PH to me is that the pages are fast to load, visually clean & doesn't look like a kids forum with pics everywhere.

Karen makes a good point about being able to identify posters who are more likely to be interesting - although personally I think that for many of us, a bs filter would be handier - you could add known bs merchants to the filter list so that you would never have to read bs again. This would

(a) ensure that you only read stuff from approved non-bs spouters;

(b) half the size of some of the threads making them quicker to download and read;

(c) conceal some threads altogether.

Of course if you are interested in bs then you don't have to use it.

How about it Ted?

Disclaimer - this post is total bs.

Edited because I can't spell bs

Please Ted don't change the layout to add sigs and avatars!
Some other forums I look at (less and less since I found PH) you get a 2 or 3 word comment followed by 10 lines of repeated drivel, sometimes it's hard to find the actual post

Bingo! I hae the damn things, they just add clutter and who needs that?.

Signatures will just confuse people when they are trying to have a sneaky read of PH in between the boss walking past... Not that anyone on here does that sort of thing...

There are still people on dial up ?!?!

Personally would hate signatures (at the bottom of each post) but would love a SMALL image under each name to help identify who is who at a glance .... like we have with the Pistonfest logos, and the few people that Ted deems mates enough to break the rules for.

(just to prove a point I tried to find out whoever it was from the members list who had an Ultima picture, and there were 2 pages of people with the name Ultima-this and Ultima-that ... I'm getting too old to have to differentiate between all these people on name alone, bah, where's me glasses and horlicks, nurse ! ....)

Good job Ted's dead

But seriously, we don't want big signatures. On some other forums it can take twice or even three times as long to read a thread because you have to sift through a load of crap pictures and quotes and general ramblings to find what people are saying!

No they are a terrible idea, if you want to see how annoying they can get have a look at S2Ki and some of the other american forums - signatures especially get in the way of reading the thread.

Avatars arn't so bad but I think PH would be a better place without them to be honest - keep it simple Speed Matters afterall.

I asked this before and it was a HUGE thumbdown, looking back at it now I agree with Ted as some sites are so cluttered up with fancy crap that the messages DO get lost.

I say no to signatures, but yes to avatars, but with the ability to turn them off if you don't want to view them

Profile is the best place for all the crap people put in signatures

oh and for the stuff, an ignore function would be cool

That seems remarkably sensible!

Yes to Avatars with a small size limit and option to turn off if you don't want to view them. Sigs however can go play in the cage with the lions

Down with Avatars!
Down with Signatures!

They make forums look a mess. Every last forum I've ever seen with them on has been unreadable. Pictures utterly unrelated to the poster - other than they chose them - often an animated GIF doing something puerile. Signatures yards long with descriptions of every last item of hifi the poster has ever owned. Why do I need to know that to also check out your opinion on the latest TV? etc etc

Pistonheads is a beacon of shining light in the dark morass of utter shite that are pretty much all other forums. I do read a few. The only ones I can bear to read time and again are the ones with a clean layout and the sort of "no bollox" rules Ted enforces.

Ted, and the community of mods that help him, do a wonderful job here. Please, please don't ever consider undoing their good efforts by starting down the slippery slope.

Sorry, there will be no personal avatars and no sigs for the reasons that others have mentioned.
