Coincidence... this article was posted today on Making Web Advertisements Work

Its from a bi-weekly column by Jakob Neilsen, web usability guru...

Might be of interest, Ted?

Interesting article. I wouldn't have suggested popup ads to anyone really, but that's what the client wanted. They are also getting a very high click through rate which again goes against expectations for ads of this type.

Anyway, he who pays the piper calls the tune.

I've just had the popup a few times this morning, switching in and out of someone's profile on a posting. The diags I got are:

Name Value
last_visit 5/2/2003 10:55:12 AM
topicOrder asc
memberId 13919
showinfo True
redirect www.pistonheads.com/gassing/default.asp?h=0

Forgot to add that I also appeared to have become logged out at some point i.e. had to log back in to post this. I'm running IE 5.5 SP2 (5.50.4807.2300) with permanent and per-session cookies enabled.

Ted,

Please don't fill this great site with popups. No matter how infrequently they are supposed to appear (and I'm seeing that VX220 one a lot) they detract from the useability of the site and are generally annoying. I know I can get software to stop them, but why should I need to?

I appreciate you need to get your funding from somewhere but can't you manage with much less obtrusive methods such as banner ads, as you have done in the past?

Cheers,
Richard.

I'm afraid the frequency of the popup has caused me far more problems than anticipated and that's down to my coding not doing what I intended it to do.

I'm fully aware of the distress it's causing people - it won't go on forever. Once I've served the necessary ads for this campaign then all will be back to normal.

Please bear with me on this. It's a popup ad, not armageddon. I've invested a huge part of my life in this site and its payoff time. Please don't begrudge me that.

If there is anyone who is getting the ad multiple times per session then I'd really appreciate some help in debugging it rather than being beaten over the head with it...

Ted, now I'm telling you this in confidence wouldn't want this to get around!

I get you’re pop up! Well almost!
Let me explain:-
I get the box and JC's wording in the top but no movie, just a grey screen.

No pop up stoppers running or ad ware if that affect it.

It's OK on my works PC. I thought that both PC's had the same IE settings, obviously not.
Any idea’s, as I like the pop up very much.

it can take a second or two for the movie to start. If it never starts then I'll get onto the company that serves it and they can check it out.

thanks for the feedback.

If anyone has any other info, please mail me via my profile.

Ted,

The pop up can be anoying, especially when yesterday, it came up every time I went back from a post to the "what's new" page. I didn't get round to telling you, sorry.
It appears to be fixed now.

I'd also like to say that, although pop-ups p1ss me off in general, I have no problem with the odd one on PH. You are running a business, and the quality of the site (especially 'Gassing') far out-weighs this minor anoyance.
