thought about this long and hard as a lot of manufacturers now have one engine with multiple c02 and bhp outputs....
if the first engine out is the best, cannot see any R&D or manufacturing savings from then designing an engine with inferior parts to 'tone it down'.... far easier just to map it down....
if the more powerful engine has come later, fair enough.... better parts likely to have been used....
and any turbo engine can be tuned.....
Their not necessary inferior parts, smaller or bigger (turbo's, intercoolers, injectors, fuel pumps etc.) or a different design of parts (camshafts, valves, pistons etc.) can all give a totally different output and character from the same basic engine without changing the "quality" of the part. Without even mentioning lighter and more expensive materials. And smaller parts mostly mean less costs; so it does make sence for a company to not only "map" their engine down, but to use different parts. And just "mapping down" a turbocharged engine with for instance relatively large turbo's may compromise drivability, fuel consumption, etc. if the first engine out is the best, cannot see any R&D or manufacturing savings from then designing an engine with inferior parts to 'tone it down'.... far easier just to map it down....

And I suspect that a company like McLaren, apart from a cost aspect, wants to "tune" their engines to what they think suits that specific car best, for instance I can imagine (I don't know) that a 570 is a bit more revy and peaky, and the new 540C might on the other hand have a bit more of a flat torque curve, less revy and less top end power.

and would the kind sir be so kind as to tell us what the Sapphire parts on the 650 is compared to these "vastly inferior" models.
That would be the same engine and tub then, slightly detuned.
650S is looking like a massive Shirt-Loser to me, the 570 and 540C design is a huge improvement - 650S is a mess. can see it be perhaps 20 grand over a similar 570C and 30 grand over a 540C in a coupla years...
I am not a fan of the 650S..... I am also of the opinion that it is not lloking right. But that's another story. That would be the same engine and tub then, slightly detuned.

One example. To get more performance from an engine, you need special alloys and special heat treatments. That cost money. The improvements are small but some of us are ready to pay for those small improvements.
And you can find other examples with composite components, suspension, etc... An then you should factor in volumes.
I totally get why some people want a 540 or 570.
I am more 12C or 650s.
Just accept the difference and stop firing at the owners of 12C and 650S. What about the 675LT then !
I suspect they will be great cars in their own right. McLaren need time to flesh out their range, which they are doing. All these cars will be classics. First editions in 20,30,40,50 years.
The 12c beats the 458 and Huracan at the Vmax events (I know that's not the be all and end all) and is clearly a technical masterpiece. So that's a great starting point and the 650S kicks the game on.
The 488 and whatever Lamborghini/Audi have to offer will push that on. All good stuff, but the 5xx series will surely only bolster the appeal of the 12C and the 650.
The other fantastic thing is that the mclaren cars are more accessible to the great unwashed (like me). But will retain that aura of unfettered and uncompromised supercar as it shares 0 with anything else and focus on performance.
So - i look forward to the 5xx taking on the Porkers at their game and giving us all another option for fun!

I would imagine the 540/570C is going to be a big seller. It's pitched against the 991 turbo and Audi R10 and probably has an easier time than against the Ferrari/Lambo competition. Really looking forward to the road tests, do we have an estimate when they will be.
Really like the 675LT also, looking foward to the test figures for that also.

Regarding the price list, I would say all you need is Carbon Pack 2 and the Security Pack and not a lot else required to have a pretty good spec (not knowing the level of standard interior trim, I guess one of the Nappa options could be na nice touch). Although not cheap, its a saving of a few grand over the individual items - a bargain some might say
Re soft close doors, does that just add automatic closing at the end once the door is part closed?

poverty spec with sports exhaust sounds good to me, Im sure no different to the others but you can easily move that £126k a long way without trying very hard.
Regards my original comments re chipping the likes of DMS as an example can move a 550/560 Gallardo to 600 with relative ease, Turbo if I am not mistaken is even easier, they could have gone for smaller turbos and the like but as said on here unlikely.
Be interesting to see.

There's also a configurator on McLaren's website.
http://configure.mclaren.com/540c
I'll take one in white with exterior carbon pack, security pack and wheels in black please
