I hope owning a McLaren isn't going to be like this video...

To be fair I have found you all to be very positive and really helpful in my initiation to buying a McLaren, especially those that have PM'd me with good advice, real experience and insights and nothing but positivity to whatever car I discuss.

It's very much appreciated.

Guys,

Do I need the iris2 hardware upgrade?

Assume most cars have the software upgrades.

Reading mixed reports: some say Iris2 isn't much less worse than Iris1.

What're your thoughts?

I only play music from iPhone or radio. That's only on long trips as well. Would be good if Satnav was ok but that's all I'm looking for.

If you don't need it, its not necessary.

Even if you have the upgrade, bear in mind it still nowhere near the functionality of current idrive's, COMANDs etc.

The issues with IRIS 1 seem to be where your over-working the system, if its just music, they seem fine.

Hi Mike, I think most if not all cars had the iris2 upgrade including the power upgrade fitted free of charge by McL.
I should think any car without it would be a good bargaining ? tool.

The software upgrade was free but not the hardware of IRIS 2

I do agree that if buying from a Mac dealer then I would try getting IRIS 2 fitted as part of the deal...

Iris2 has been far more stable for me. the nav system actually works to the point I haven't required taking the tomtom any longer and while the music through usb has always worked on Iris1, it would occasionally go slightly bats and iris2 actually has radio capability. Haven't used the bluetooth/mobile connection though which still seems to have some issues. Would definitely suggest trying to get an Iris2 equipped car or ask for the change as part of the deal.

IRIS 1 is fine for playing music but that is the only thing it can do.

IRIS 2 is much better if you want sat nav in addition to music smile

Most, if not all, cars have IRIS 1 plus software upgrade.

IRIS 2 hardware was at a cost, which was increased substantially from jan 1st.

I just could not leave with IRIS 1. Too irritating to have the system to freeze all the time, transition from music to guidance with awful white noise and the sat nav to loose the plot and stop guiding with no warning and only reset by swithching engine off..... IRIS 2 solves all this non sense that should not have made it on a car like that.

Hi all,

Do I need the axle lifter on a 12c? Will it really limit where I can go? I have plenty of speed umps nearby (driving in London).

There seem to be very few out there for sale with them on and have chosen a car - but it doesn't have the axle lifter.

The concern I have is that my Aston has to be nursed up the driveway backward to avoid bottoming out. Which it does ok.

The car I am close to buying is 150 miles away and have no obvious way of getting the car to my house pre-sale to test it.

Any way of measuring ???

Thanks for your help.

There must be someone close by that has one that would be kind enough to come over and check it out...

If driving around London then it's quite useful. I tried going over a few speed humps without the vehicle raised(650)and something scraped as I went over it. Sometimes might be over cautious but having it makes it easier to drive at normal speeds rather than a crawl. I don't know if the ride heights for MP4 and 650 are the same

I do not have the axle lift on my 12C and I have never grounded the front so far.
You can very occasionally hear the front wheel strakes that are behind the front wheels touch a speed bump on the way down if it is a bit steep but it does not do any damage as such.

The 650s with its flat front lip as opposed to curved front end on the 12C makes the 650s more prone to touch on steep bumps on entry, and I understand it is a must on the 650s.

Agreed with mb1. Have never had a problem on speed humps/carpark entry yet on the 12c yet. However if you are requiring it on the Aston, it might be an issue.....

I counter the above, having gone from 12C to 650S, I cannot believe how much improvement there was to be made on top of an already amazing car.
Just the person I was looking for hehe
How do they both compare to you Aston Roadster you had previously?
I'm contemplating a 650S spider
Though having just seen the 570S that is cool

Selon - I guess this is to replace the Virage?

Nice idea!
I must admit I keep coming back to the McLaren spiders on here hehe
A 650S is going to make the Virage feel like a bus!

I'm surprised there's not more suggestions towards the 540/570 cars
You get your ideal spec as ordering new and it's around the same price as the upper 12c/lower650s market
Performance difference/prestige I'm sure is there, but it's not going to be much

As Rambolambo says above, there's slim pickings in the 650s market, so you're likely to have to compromise on spec somewhere along the line

True but you wont see a 540/570 Coupe til next year & a spider could be 18 months minimum!

12c/650 (spider or coupe) you can enjoy NOW smile
