This is my volcano red 12c, the colour comes alive in the sun.

Its got to be the reflective nature of the 3 layer pearlescent paint that distorts it in the camera lens
This is the only picture I've seen that comes vaguely close to capturing it
My 12c is in Volcano Red. It is an absolutely fantastic colour in the sun, definitely better than Volcano Orange. However it can look a bit flat on cloudy days as you lose the sparkle in the paintwork. I really like and probably prefer McLaren Orange on balance as it looks great regardless of weather & lighting conditions. One advantage of McLaren Orange is that it is an easy colour to touch-up or respray, unlike the Volcano colours
Volcano Red is definitely stunning in the flesh.
What is the view on Volcano Orange? Seems to be 'burnt orange' in the shade, which, in my opinion, is a lovely shade also. In the sunshine it's a stunning colour. Definitely suits a supercar.
Are there many about (not talking about being for sale)?

All the volcano colours come alive in the sunlight, its obviously to do with the 3 layer pearlescent paint. That said the pearlescent white is a lot more subdued, obviously better than flat white but the sparkle and reflections on the lighter colour are less. I love Volcano Yellow but decided it was not so good for resale on a McLaren and being a marmite colour seriously limits buyers
Orange was the launch colour and seems less popular through choice. Again it looks stunning in the bright sunlight but less so if the sun is not out. On a grey day it can even lean towards a brownish tone which is not to my personal choice

Yes, I have a volcano orange car and I can assure you it has never looked 'brownish' that description is completely inaccurate. What is the view on Volcano Orange? I dont think I have ever seen a colour so sensitive to the light as VO
I just got back recently from a trip to the south of france and there was one from germany in our garage, to me it just looked a rusty brown in the poor daylight (car park was underground 1 level but with open sides)equally I have seen it look IMO ok but dont think it would be the colour for me.
will try and post picture tonight unless SELON has a copy to hand.

I only have the pic of the Romans one I saw, which sold recently...looked a stunna in the sunshine...
Even in sunlight different parts of the car look different colours which is a lot cooler than just a solid red, metallic silver.Front end of the car in that shot looks great with the suns reflection but maybe I'm colour blind as the back is definitely looking darker ( brownish ) to me. The front would look like that on a grey day so imagine how much darker the back would look.
As I've said on a grey day my Volcano red looks a lot darker and almost Ron Burgundy.
At the end of the day its a very personal thing. Black seems the most common but I would never buy a black car personally.
Don't think there is a must have, must not have colour with a McLaren so choose what you like and sod anyone else's opinion.
Its really irrelevant unless you are already considering the resale aspect.
I would of bought a volcano yellow 12C spider car but was a fraction away from doing a deal that worked for me at the time. Probably worked out better in the long run but I thought that particular yellow car with carbon and diamond cut wheels looked stunning and was a real eye catcher.
Happier on balance and hindsight with the volcano red 650S spider even though the car is a keeper so resale colour is not a factor

Rambo ...Here is another picture of a Volcano Orange 12c on a dark day, with the 'brown' coming through...
You can see how the colour of the car really alters the lines in a different light...
On a more serious note, the colour changes from the light to the darker end of the spectrum (burnt orange?) on the VO really looks good to my eyes. I'm a fan.

That's all that matters if you like it. I love it in the sun but not such a fan in the shade. Don't remind me of brown cars. myparents had a metallic brown/bronze mark 1 Escort estate and it was like public humiliation everytime we went out in it.You can see how the colour of the car really alters the lines in a different light...

They bought it new and kept it for 26 years. shame they sold it because it would be worth a tidy sum nowadays and 5 x times what they paid for it
Have to agree with you, there aren't any 'bad' colour choices. Just personal taste - which is how it should be I think. Still working on finding my 'right' McLaren.
I did chuckle when I saw the Allegro...reminds me that now all supercar have the same shape steering wheel! Ahead of its time but not recognised for the great car it was...and I'm sure I read somewhere that the steering wheel was the precise thickness of the one in James Hunt's F1 car, allowing for the thickness of his gloves whilst holding a fag and a glass of champagne.

Selon, I had exactly the same problem and for me it was either Volcano orange or volcano red. Both are great colours that really show the car. All I can help you with is that I have done 20,000 miles in my car without one issue and it has been absolutely fantastic. I hope you enjoy yours as much when you get it. Best of luck.
