Well I haven't cancelled my 570S Track Pack order, nor did seeing the 720S in the flesh in Geneva tempt me to pay an extra £38k for one, since it was such a polarizing car in terms of looks and packaging.

However, this is not a bad thing; I will get many years of blissful motoring and track days out of the 570sTP and in the meantime McLaren will continue to release variants of the 720S such as the Spyder, 745LT, and then the new hypercar, new Sports Series models - all of which will give me a lot of choice over the coming years.

From all the YouTube and written reviews I have scoured the car is epically fast, both a GT and track car and offers incredible hypercar performance and looks for a supercar price. When all is said and done, and all reviews and awards have been written, they have sold the first year's production and the order books are extending well into 2018. I'd call that a success really.

The youtubers got the very same invites as the evo/autocar journalists to the same press launch and handed back the cars at the end of the day as well so were asdependent on the same manufacturer goodwill to get those invites.

You might have a point if the video under discussion was about an extended period of ownership about a car but for these press day drives, at least one can be reasonably sure the pro journalists types (Meaden/bovingdon/Harris/Catchpole etc) have an idea of how to actually drive so when they say something about a car, applying a suitable hype filter based on past experience with what they say might get you something useful about a car. It's unclear to me that the youtubers have any idea how to drive other than up and down kings road trying to get themselves more social media clicks.
Yeah but how many of those journos then jumped into their own McLaren and drove home? But if you are saying we shouldn't listen to anyone's opinion unless they are a professional journalist.... fair point wink

the reality is that Mclaren have made an insanely fast GT car with miracle suspension which allows it to perform well on the track without any road comprises (and it's actually quiet enough to be allowed on track days which is getting increasingly rare)

the LT version will be less of a GT car and feel more 'alive' (something which is easy to engineer into a car imo)

does anyone know the expected cost of the LT - £350k?

Random observation / question but is it a common assumption now that a lightweight or track-focused 'special' McLaren will be badged as an LT? If so, could they not come up with something better, or more accurate? I always thought using this terminology for the 675 was pointless as the car wasn't really a 'Long Tail' like the original McLaren F1 variant. It just seemed to me to be trying to piggy-back on the proper racing heritage and mystique of the F1.

Hi Belfast Boy, I hate to be pedantic, but the 675LT has a tail 3cms longer than the 650S !! I don't think that the 675SLT (slightly Longer Tale) sounds so good, although I don't know!

not quite, I'm saying I'm probably more likely to believe what someone who actually knows what he's doing compared to someone with greater means to buy something.

No, and what an extraordinarily juvenile and superficial review John Barker has written.

He has not one single word to say about the car's steering, brakes or driving position - after all, what do they matter? - and yet he finds time to elaborate criticism of the car's electronic drift control and engine note. Ever heard of priorities, John?

A reviewer might dislike the car - fair enough - but it should not be too much to expect a magazine with the reputation and historic standards of evo to publish a review of substance, not this vacuous crap.

Well said flemke. The news said Evo awarded 4 stars, but the report, 41/2 stars!

My thoughts exactly.

Evo sent the wrong man.

I agree to some extent. I just think both perspectives are interesting and valid and possibly more relevant to how many people use their cars. The youTubers do huge road trips and track days etc. so I'd say a little unfair to brand them all as posers.

...he's been unfairly tainted with the "Isn't he a YouTuber" brush?! - those naughty kids out of school that gave a lukewarm reception to the car.....it's a polite warning....

Haha I don't think I've been victimised for being a Youtube bellend. Delays across the board from what I've gathered.
Interested though in what others have been quoted

Don't let it upset you. It's only a magazine and some other blokes opinion.

Sounds like this first 720 is the 'generalist' edition for Asian markets and your typical nouvelle-petrolhead mac owner (folk who grew up on Scoobys & Audi RS cars) who is just looking for a visual/lifestyle statement rather than a profound driving experience.

I'm sure Mac have done their homework. They know what car will sell in the biggest numbers. It's hilarious that folk on pistonheads think they represent the entire buying public. How arrogant and narcissistic. It's just a small microcosm of nerds on here sporting lord anthony parkers. 99% of buyers CGAF about steering feel. They wouldn't even know what is it !

And for the boring nerds, the LT will follow soon no doubt.
