Unless the lap times of different cars are measured on the same day in cars driven by the same driver on the same tyres, with the cars having been set up for the conditions by the same technicians, to differentiate between lap times that are 1 or 2% apart and conclude that car A is "faster than" car B is meaningless.
I'd expect the difference to be near to 5%

It could be 5% either way, who knows! I have never driven a P1, and are not likely too but will drive a 720s soon.It seems that they are pretty different cars in the way they extract their considerable performance. I would expect, especially after the figures/lap times from Autocar's test that it will vary from track to track. Both incredible cars, but at a 1/4 of the price, and in its breadth of abilities the 720s the most incredible. Although the P1 no doubt the most exciting to drive.

Highly disappointing that the 720S uses the same nose lift as the old super series.

Speaking to a journo earlier it just takes an age like the old system. Given how quick Porsche's system is on the GT3 and the Ford GT's lift takes half a second it really is a bit slack.

And before anyone starts bleating on about how it's a supercar and not important, I've done many many miles in 650Ss and the lift really is ridiculously slow. Not sure how long it is, but if you're in traffic and have to stop to raise it, it feels like an age. Plus these cars are meant to be every day usable so being unable to go over a speed bump is a big issue for many.

That was no issue on the 1st gen SS as it was their first attempt, but for the second gen they really should have done something better.

If it's like the 570s nose lift, you certainly don't need to stop to raise it, it's not super quick but it will raise when your moving at 30mph or less, then drops down automatically at 37mph.

I've done 2.5k in a 570GT over the last month or so, it has lift, I have a steep incline on my drive and live in a city with plenty of speed bumps...........not used the lift one single time..................

The 570s have better ground clearance than the 720.

And don't all start getting your knickers in a twist, I love these cars, really do. But the simple fact is, the nose lift on these isn't great.

I'm merely saying I had hoped they would have got a better system for v2

The point was, even if it's poor, I've not needed to use it even once.........just don't think the speed of the lift system even needs to be mentioned as a negative...........or even a positive.

Totally Agree. Lift speed on my 12C is glacially slow and something that really should have been improved.

Wow, they didn't change that? TBH that's pretty unacceptable, given how often you have to raise the nose around town and how long it takes in the 650S and 570S.

I spoke to McLaren about this today, and 2 hours later they came back to me. It is the system used in the 650S , but updated and improved. It now works at a touch of a button. This can be operated at up to 30MPH and takes 7seconds to rise fully! Slower than the opposition I said, ah yes but lighter too she said. So an improvement, but not perfect.

Not that this will matter to anyone, but the shock value of the looks is starting to fade for me, albeit slightly.

From side on the cabin still looks like Quasimodo's back. but in dark colours, the skull lights do look interesting, rather than shocking.

Anyone else feel the same? Will it become a design classic in the future a la Bangle BMWs?

I've always liked the nose since I saw it in the carbon.

Really happy to see that Rob Melville (who led the 720S design) has now been made Design Director. Had a long chat with him over dinner and drinks in Geneva and his passion and excitement for the future of McLaren is seriously infectious.

Hi guys.... anyone got thoughts of option deffo buys / dont buys in terms of spec? It seems you can spec the car full-bore track focussed or boulevard cruiser and anywhere inbetween, i've spent ages procrastinating on that configurator back and forth and not making much progress.....

Are you not planning to put RFL on it then ? rofl

Seems to have all the essentials and nice spec for that money. Surprised its only £20k in options as that is low.
Can see majority of cars creeping up to £260k

Wait. What?

The 200K'ish car does NOT come with parking sensors?

I'd be lived at that. The rest of the fripperies, fair do's personal choice, but thats a bit fking steep.
On the contrary I think that that one is OK resigned to the options list. Many, myself included, feel that something telling me how to park is not just unnecessary, but an insult. £4750 thousand for a 'sports' exhaust though, on a supercar, the cost of a Dacia Sandaro. I'd be less insulted if the salesman called my mother a slag.
