As a few others have said above it's all in the buying.....

However I think £15k in 4 months/4K miles is a bit pessimistic - unless you buy retail and then trade it in..or need to add a warranty, pay for a service and a SOR fee (£8k for these 3 items).

Late (2015) decent spec, low mile cars can be had for £160k, £15k loss means these will be £145k early summer....sounds too cheap.
The £15k is not just depreciation in 4 months - its all the expense of buying and selling (dealers profits, sales commission, warranty, price reduction for buyer). The notion of buying and selling with minimal loss only works with limited edition, highly coveted cars - the 650s is no longer one of them...

Anyone who really wants to shift a 650s right now has to price it under £160k. SOR is just blurring the true market values. Try getting a trade outright bid on your car and you will see....

Yet again I feel the need to violently agree with you biggrin

I recently bought at this level (sub £160k) for a low mile, late year, high spec car......the dealer had it advertised at sub £170k, they owned the car and with pretty much zero enquires (thier location may have played a part in this) were keen to get out of it.

With cars regularly selling at £175k I cant agree with that assumption. As with any car if you have an odd car colour/spec and you are trying to sell privately or through a non franchise dealer it will need to be priced accordingly.

I was pleasantly surprised with my last trade bid from a McLaren dealer. Maybe they had a buyer already lined up for my car but it was £10k more than I expected and more than what you are speculating about.

Just interested to know what makes you the authority on McLaren prices. Do you own one or recently sold one ? Or more likely you want to buy one maybe

Macs are not mileage sensitive like Ferraris are. I owner a 12c before my 650 and sold it with almost 50k on the odo for good money and very quickly. Ferraris are all clocked anyway. You can't clock a Mclaren so everyone's happy to accept the honesty and pragmatism this actually brings.

I'm about to pick up a 650S, and have got a shortlist of cars - the plan is to get one for about £170k, drive it over the first half of the summer, and sell in July. This worked pretty well for me last year with my Hurcan Spyder, but that was the first in the country and there were none on Autotrader when I sold it, so it took one day. Obviously things will go very differently with the 650S, so the goal here is to get one which will sell quickly, and make sure I buy for the right price. Basically it doesn't matter how much it actually costs, the only thing I'm optimising for is the total depreciation between purchase and sale.

There are quite a few that fit the bill. However the problem is that many of them have 6k+ miles on them. I typically do 4-5k miles over the summer, so I'm worried that if I get one of those I'll cross the 10k threshold when I come to sell it.

The only 10k+ mile car has been sitting on autotrader, for £155k, for almost a year, and no one wants it.

What's the general consensus on this - is over 10k miles on a 650S basically game over for resale? Am I better off paying more for a lower mileage version, say £180k?
I know several McLaren owners with cars way over 30k miles, they are not as sensitive to mileage as other similar cars. Of course they will be priced accordingly but you are talking about only a few thousand miles. Buy privately or through AB with a transferable warranty and you shouldn't lose much at all. Just don't but at an inflated price from Ascot and take a hit from them. I know someone who traded a 12C back to the dealer after 3 months and lost nothing. I also know someone who bought a new R8 and didn't like it, sold it after 3 months and lost £30k!

McLaren prices are pretty static at the moment and we reckon around £1 mile for depreciation plus SOR cost. So that works out under your £10k threshold so go for it!

I would be genuinely interested to know of the reasonable spec cars you think are available for 160k or below. I have been monitoring for some time with a target of picking something up around or close to that level but have not had any luck
