Was looking at some Ferrari's the other day, sales guy was saying a customer was looking at a 488 but went with a 720s after a 40k discount.

I guess one way to handle depreciation is to arrange it so the customer can sell it for 40k under list and still break even.

As others have said McLaren have a serious problem with depreciation, I would not like to own a base 570s or 720s when the newest LT's are announced.

However, at some point these cars are going to arrive at a 'too cheap to say no'.
Always amazes me how some folks never get the discounting thing. If a car is discounted it's done for a reason I.e. it is too expensive.

Discounted cars continue to depreciate far more than non discounted ones as a rule. Apply at all levels..... from mainstream stuff to supercars.

The cheapest cars are invariably those that aren't discounted.

History says differently. Great drivers cars are the ones that the market sees rise in value, and many of these were availlable discounted when new.

Great drivers cars/driver involvement are rarely linked with high prices.

Two examples......Carrera GT considered undervalued by many experts. Lamborghini Aventador is a joke from a driving perspective and yet values remain relatively high.

Other factors have a greater bearing on value.

Just out of interest, many miles have you done in Aventadors?

I have done about a thousand miles in them in total, and they really aren't great. Too wide, awful visibility, crashy ride and a terrible gearbox. The engine and looks are the only things going for it, IMO a 720S beats it in every respect. Hell, I'd rather a Huracan Performante than an Aventador.

Aventador is a strange one, prices look to be all over the place (SV in Yorkshire with 150 miles at £500k, one in London with 1,150 miles at £380k) but with 82 listed on the PH classified, how many are actually being sold?

The stock Aventador is faster round the Ring than the F12, Huracan, and 12C.

The Aventador SV, of course, is faster round the Ring than all McLaren road cars ever made in history.

The Aventador is a fast car, but it needs a skilled driver. And some everyday folk may struggle to drive it properly.

The new S version is much improved with rear wheel steer and adjustable suspension. Gearbox remains. Still nothing touches it for road presence.

Don't see how what he posted there is all that bad - seems a fair assessment - I (and many others I wager) certainly could not drive an Aventador at the limit and it is without a doubt a fast car, no McLaren was faster than the SV (can't be bothered to check if the statement re F12 etc is accurate, but would not surprise me) - so ....

That sounds like sour grapes to me from the Ferrari dealer. What dealer could afford a £40K discount on a car at this level assuming its a new car

may be a pre registered Launch car. £40k at these prices is only 20%.

Yes my local Ferrari dealer is struggling to sell their 488 stock both coupe and Spyder, looking at their web site you can see all the pictures were taken last summer.

No fully aware, but from memory none of his posts I read were insulting - just a little over the top sometimes / but that is the case with a few posters on Pistonheads
