yep, the very car that sparked my original post! Did you have to tell everyone?? Now if you could all please forget you've seen it until I can get there to view it, would be much appreciated.thanks all for the thoughts and advice, and in particular that buyer's guide.
It does seem like these cars are pretty reliable and the Mclaren warranty scheme is a real re-assurance, and not one of those where they exclude anything they can. Which makes it a must.
Basically I think I need to go and drive one, get hooked and do something rather foolish. Agree, you only get one go at life.

well, if the cars were so reliable, why is everyone (especially owners) saying that the warranty is an absolute must have? it's probably more accurate to say the cars are reliable until they aren't and the potential costs are such it would only be sensible to get the warranty.Do update after you have a test drive anyway, you should know pretty quickly if it's the right car for you.

yeah, touche. Do update after you have a test drive anyway, you should know pretty quickly if it's the right car for you.
I do take your point that there is a difference between being able to afford to buy a car, and being able to afford to own/run the car. Important to go in with eyes wide open.

Even so, if this £4k really does cover everything other than fuel then it seems like it is a very cheap supercar to run isnt it?

the 12c is still an extraordinary car anyway by any standards, even compared to any of the new cars for sale. Even though I'm trying to flog mine , it has never failed to bring a smile whenever I've driven it in all the 5+ years of ownership and I'll definitely miss the old girl rather a lot.First thing EVERYONE says about my volcano red 650S spider is what a wonderful colour followed by what car is it.
If only I had a £1 for every time the colour has been mentioned I could afford another one.
I know its not available on 12C but I must admit my favourite McLaren colour at the moment is Ventura Orange though and I hope to spec my next McLaren LT in it

timely topic...
I've been thinking of a 'budget Mc'
Been running a 991 GT3 for 3 years now, and didn't get an allocation for a .2
Nothing else in the Porsche line up tickles me wotnot
(had 3 other GT3's prior + other pork)
Running costs dont seem that bad to me - £500 pm should sort it ?
Yes Porsche are relatively peanuts to run (but I wouldn't be without an OPC warranty on one either), but almost every other car I've had has cost more PA to run than my GT3!
Not yet had a drive in a Mc - maybe I should ....
anyone know when the new Hatfield garage is open for business - I work 2 mins away from it when its finished.
The bit I'm having difficulty in gauging is how much really does go wrong with the Mc ?

You're going to get a pretty wide range of opinions about the 'how much goes wrong' question I think it's fair to say some people have had quite a lot of issues but many others have had almost none. To be fair to Mclaren, they don't have form in going through engines quite like the 991.1 gt3 though... Not yet had a drive in a Mc - maybe I should ....

Get a good drive in one first tbh, if you really like it then you can decide properly if getting a warrantied car is worth it (and I'd really suggest stumping up with the Mclaren warranty or getting an existing one with it).
£500 pm should be very doable if you don't track the car a lot as the car goes through consumables very quickly.

I think the answer is that a lot can go wrong, and it can be expensive, but if you keep extending the McLaren Warranty then it doesn’t matter.
Well it does though. There's the hassle of actually having the problem which might affect your existing plans (or worse be caught overseas with that problem) then the delay in getting it worked on by the dealership/signed off for warranty/repaired etc which can be considerable.... The warranty is very effective but blithely saying 'it doesn't matter' isn't entirely accurate either.I have found McLaren to be incredibly easy in terms of fixing anything that comes up, so given that this means there is no cost implication then it comes down to inconvenience and my McLaren has certainly been no less reliable than my experience with Astons/Ferraris/Lambos. Porsche are definitely a bit less hassle but they are not entirely trouble free.
