Just a little video of what I think we are missing when we think supercar!

Brilliant! There is nothing like a Ferrari/Lambo V12 in terms of sound.https://youtu.be/yUABlTSDNJ8

. Merc are the only ones that seemingly make a decent sounding v8 to my ear but the VAG NA V10 stomps the lot dead.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XflP9D53slYIt's noise like this which is the reason I haven't left Lamborghini yet. Every McLaren I've driven is vacuum cleaner by comparison.
I have a Larini Clubsport on mine.

I think the one mistake McLaren made was recently parading the entire range around Goodwood at the 76MM, when all other cars in attendance are full race spec classics from pre-war to group5 - absolute beasts of noise machines.
The McLarens weren't being pushed (demo lap) but still basically silent. I think the slightly spirited driver in the 650s Spider made the best noise, but perhaps he had a better exhaust system. Senna a close second.

While I loved the noise my Ferrari made and the Lambo howl was absolutely heavenly McLarens are just so damn good that I can overlook the lack of audible drama. I suppose you can't have everything (where would you put it?) so something has to give. Interesting stuff about the engine configuration limiting the sound possibilities, good info!
I don't think the sound of McLaren's is too bad at all. I had a 2010 458 that sounded epic, the reason it sounded so good was the lift off pops/burbles/cracks. Then from 2012 Ferrari wrote them out of the software, had a few Italia's since & a 488 & a speciale and to be honest I don't actually find them any better sounding than the 720 in this regard at all.
Had an R8 V10 +, and again that sounded great on lift off, cracking & spitting etc, but it seems that most car manufacturers don't program this in anymore , audi/lambo do and seeing how popular it makes their cars I struggle to see why it is not more common to add the lift off/down shift sound effects.
The thing I miss most from the aural drama of driving is that rapid downshift a few gears into a tight bend & the resulting gunfire...
but I don't fit in lambos so have to live without it
For what its worth , Recent 650s spider I owned sounded great with the rear window down , sounded far better than the italias/speciale to my ear

To be honest I think this artificial ‘crackle/pop, etc’ is cringe worthy and so artificial. If you’ve got to program it in it shouldn’t be there. Personally I prefer my 2013 458 to my previous 2011 car for sound, so I guess horses for courses. An extended drive in a 570 Spider and a passenger ride out yesterday in a 720 left me appreciating how important (to the theatre and involvement) the sound is in creating a large part of the ‘supercar experience’. This is something you live with 100% of the time and hence it is far more important to me than an additional 5% performance when at 10/10’nths, which is something you benefit from probably less than 0.1% of the time. Unfortunately, from my experience the Mclaren sound/noise takes away more from the ownership proposition than it adds.Had an R8 V10 +, and again that sounded great on lift off, cracking & spitting etc, but it seems that most car manufacturers don't program this in anymore , audi/lambo do and seeing how popular it makes their cars I struggle to see why it is not more common to add the lift off/down shift sound effects.

I wouldn't say that the McLaren sound/noise takes anything AWAY from the ownership proposition....that would be saying that's its an annoying god awful noise..............it's not................I would agree that it's not on a par with a screaming Na V8/10 but it's certainly not a terrible noise.Sarnie said:

Yeah I agree. Its a different and NOT so pleasant high pitch screaming sound IMHO but its still loud and aggressive.A 675 LT spider that sounded like the Huracan Performante would be my perfect car but sadly it does not exist so I'm making do with the 650S spider and Huracan Performante coupe for the time being and occasionally get out the F355 GTS manual with capristo for very special occasions.
Drove 720S yesterday and whilst I'm becoming more accustomed to the looks and it certainly has road presence it did not excite me enough despite all its performance and that was mainly down to sound
