Afternoon all.

Thought I'd post another quick update on the 540c as I've just had it back from its 4th service and MOT.

Sadly between MOTs I've only done 1800 miles which is far too low. I'm blaming COVID mainly but priorities have changed with my wee boy / dog. Just struggle to find a lot of time to get out and use it.

Saying that it's been relatively faultless, other than the radio tuner failing which was replaced under warranty. Possibly a blessing as the DAB reception is a lot better now.

Service and MOT cost for the 4th (major) service was £2086 all in. I think this is very reasonable as it also included a (£370!) air con regas, wipers and tyre inflator refresh which was out of date (?)

Warranty to renew was going to be £2850, which I've decided to brave and self-warranty. Time will tell if that's a good idea or not, but previous year when I did renew, I never used it other than the radio tuner. And with such little miles it's even harder to stomach!

I'm rapidly approaching my end of term PCP (4 years) so I'm needing to quickly decide what to do with the car come March. I'd love a trade up to a 600LT or 720S but I'm just not sure the cost to change is worth it to me. I'd be looking at a £60k cost to change.. And £60k buys a lot of a second car.

Other option would obviously be to change it for something of similar value, but there is literally nothing out there that tempts me. The 540C is such a good all rounder it's going to be hard to replace. I've thought about a complete change of direction (eg RS6) which i could daily but I'd definitely miss having the fun car in the garage.

I really must get out with the camera and get some pictures before winter hits!

Completely agree. The Emira is another left field idea

It says a lot for how good the 540/570 is, or what a 'bargain' (relatively) that they currently are.

We watched Skyfall last night so I'm planning a wee jaunt over to Glen Etive in the next few weeks before the weather turns. I did the trip in a V8 Vantage but fancy another visit.

Thanks chaps, that's much appreciated and nice to know some are getting use out of the thread.

I was hoping to get out the last couple of days but not had much of a chance. Will update this weekend

So yeah, but of an update well overdue. This thread was meant to be the ownership experience, warts and all, and this for me for the first major wart.. To set the scene, I've now owned the car for 4.5 years roughly and covered 15k miles. So averaging around 3k miles a year give or take. That's not taking account for COVID where the car probably did around 1k miles that year.

It's now 5 years old and overall it's been absolutely fantastic. Genuinely love it as it's been a complete pleasure, with no major issues along the way. The corrosion of the paint has been frustrating but McGlasgow have always been superb in sorting it and nothing that has really caused the car not to run. Pretty good going I guess in comparison to some unlucky others.

I was booked in for its 5th service at Glasgow recently which I believe is a major, plus coolant change. So I was expecting a reasonable bill, as there is normally something needed doing over and above the service alone.. As above, very little issues with mine so I self warranty. I renewed the warranty on the 4th year but for the 5th I decided not to. Only other minor issue was the plastic panel on the A pillar had snapped so needed replaced. Seems fairly common?!

I dropped the car Thursday evening, and Friday evening I had a missed call from McGlasgow, I knew it wasn't going to be good news! Quick call back to Ricky (who has recently replaced Scott) for the full run down of the issues. It seems the Scottish roads have had their way with the underneath, as quite a lot of corrosion was spotted. The full list was, and all was also recommend replacing rather than repair -

Air Con pipework corroded and leaking
Coolant pipework corroded and leaking
Wiper motor earth fault - wiper not parking correctly
Both rear suspension springs snapped due to corrosion (McLaren only replace full damper assemblies)
Tyres all at 3mm
Brakes with a bit of surface corrosion (suspect this is due to lack of use more than anything)
Service
Plastic panel replacement

Total bill - £13.5k eek

Naturally , caught me completely off guard and actually put a bit of a downer on the weekend as we were away for a wedding. Ricky was superb throughout though, and had a good chat through all of the issues. I understand McLaren need to recommend replacing parts rather than repairing, but the coolant pipe was simply just a clean up and remake job. It was only the connection leaking, and with a defuzz and refit it's fine. Still, has been by far my most significant bill to date, in fact most expensive car bill I've ever had, period. It's put me in three minds as to what to do next, do I keep it now this has all been done.. do I sell it on now that it's in a good state.. or trade up for an LT

So yeah, bit of a nasty bill that certainly caught me unaware.. but I guess even with warrabty a lot of that wouldn't have been covered. Unsurprisingly since the service, the car feels brilliant . The rear suspension change has obviously made a huge difference.

Last frustrating point is that when the car was being cleaned up post service the guys noticed some more paint bubbling on the arches. These have already been replaced twice, and will now be changed for a third time thankfully it is within the 5 year window, just. But there seems to be a serious issue here as replacing wings can't become the norm on a car like this. Not sure what the issue is?!

Some great points there but don't agree on the running costs being regular. For me suspension, air con, coolant pipework and wiper motors shouldn't be failing after 5 years or 15k miles. The car is garaged at all times.

I do agree on keeping it though, probably makes the most sense, given what else is going on just now.

I'll be honest, the GT3s do nothing for me other than I respect how good they are. Just not something that I'd buy. I'd actually be more likely to go Boxster Spyder route I think but again, it's never really tempted me. It's an odd statement I know as I am extremely taken by our Cayenne. My wife misses her old Disco Sport but I think the cayenne is significantly better

Were none of those issues in year 4 when the warranty wasn't renewed? Seems convenient that all that happened in the year that you didn't renew the warranty.
No apparently not, although I don't doubt McGlasgows honesty. I doubt a lot of it would have been covered anyways. I don't think the warranty would cover corroded pipes and springs?

fridaypassion said:
What was the actual bill then? If you remove the tyres and servicing from this bill was it actually all that bad? I know its a bugger but TBH I went into Porsche and got rinsed £5000 for a service and tyres on one of their yawn machines that's with no faults or issues!

It would be interesting to know if all the issues would have been done under warranty I would say the AC pipe and coolant hose corrosion wouldn't be covered on an extended warranty would they?

I have certainly just accepted that the warranty is a fact of ownership. I haven't heard of any engine replacements on the 600 I have but have heard that the gearboxes are one that's been swapped out a fair bit.

Sounds like you have a had a decent run with nothing major for 4 years or more. I would imagine you'll probably get another 4 after this pain!
The work is really only half done but have already paid similar to you for the 'must dos' such as suspension, service etc.

Tyres I'm going to be swapping all four to MPS4s soon so haven't changed them yet. 3mm so will see me to winter then change.

Pipework has been cleaned up and will get rechecked when it's back in for the paintwork corrosion next month. Looks ok so far. No pools of coolant in the garage!

Justin220, does seem bad to me that a 4 year old motor with such little mileage would have corrosion.

Might be worth having the underside covered with Bilt-Hamber Hydrate-80 or similar.
That's a great call.

Sorry to hear about these costs. Always good to ask the forum when dealers report issues like this. Thorney's spring replacement offer has only just been announced, but they may have mentioned it allowing you to hold off.

I had my 5 year service/20,000 miles at Thorney Motorsport ast month, all fine but 3 things reported:

- Slight cracking on some suspension bushes, seems fine and not even an MOT advisory.
- Slight weep from a front low temp radiator pipe which has a little corrosion on it too. McLaren suggested I part with £1,600 to replace it, Thorney quoted £575 + VAT (or something close to that). Since I just had the 20k service with coolant change I elected to wait and see, I wil get it done next time the car goes in for anything else.
- Corrosion on lower driver's door. This will be the last panel except the roof to have been 'attended to'. I'm keeping a watch out for 'round 2'. Just caught and inspected by McLaren within the 5 year limit. The car is going into MrBrum's bodyshop in September for replacement while I'm on holiday so no issue for me.

Oh, and tyres reported as 2017 date codes (even though rears were replaced in 2019 at Pirelli Performance themselves grr). I will change these for Michelins at the end of the year. Will change all the sensors at the same time.
That's reassuring to read, at least it's not just me. Although I wish I'd known about the spring option a few weeks ago.. smile

Same thing on the tyres. 2017 code for the fronts for me.

I can only dream about owning such a car, but I wouldn’t expect those repeated corrosion issues on a four year old car the fraction of the price of your McLaren regardless as to whether it has a low mileage or not.

I admire your patience.
I'm in the same boat. This is a dream car for me and still feels a real event to drive. The novelty just doesn't wear off. I only managed to justify it by the reasonable running costs (until now) and predicted depreciation..

Real kick in the nuts there Justin.

I'm still gobsmacked how they could get that total up to £13k for such a small amount of work.

Everytime my car goes into Glasgow, it gets the free health check video sent out to me.

All of that would of been pointed out, and when the quote of £13k came back, that would be good enough for me to say park it up and I shall have it collected.

The 5yr service last month for my 675 at Glasgow was £1600.

A 540 has to be a decent bit cheaper.

A set of P4S tyres for my car can be had for £900.

So at £2500, I genuinely cannot see where they arrive at over £10k for the other bits and pieces.

That could of been professionally delivered to Thorney and you still would of had about £5k change after all the works and adding his warranty.

I have always flown the flag for McLaren Glasgow but this does not make them look good at all.

Its almost like they are taking the piss as they are the only dealer in Scotland.
I can't quite remember the individual costs but it was something like

Dampers £1800 each
Wiper motor £1500
Rear tyres £420 plus vat each
Front tyres £320 each plus vat
Brakes discs and pads etc..
Service
Labour

Adds up quickly!

It’s a supercar , they are not cheap to buy because it’s a supercar. So parts are going to be expensive, BUT dealers of all makes charge silly money for tyres etc.

The problem for Justin220 is that in Scotland there is only MC Scotland.

Tbh when the car is due its next service l would book it into Thorney and enjoy the drive there and back.

Thorney tbf are really decent people who are not in the business of ripping you off so that’s my recommendation.

Love you car btw enjoy.
I think my issue is not so much with the cost, its more the fact the car has corroded underneath in the first place. It just shouldn't be happening on a well maintained, garaged, 5 year old car.

Can you imagine a 5 year old VW Golf needing suspension, air con and coolant pipework replacing after only 15k miles?

On reflection, although the bill was a big one and unexpected.. I've been fairly lucky with mine over the 4 or so years. No real issues, and all the minor bits were easily fixed at service time. Absolutely superb car to drive and I still think they are (relatively) very good value for money. Genuine supercar looks, and performance and it's been a joy to own.

Warranty wise, it's nice peace of mind but it's also expensive if you don't use it..

Evening all, time for another quick update as I've not long got my car back from McGlasgow (again). Unfortunately another fairly disappointing update to follow my last one.

As per previous post, my 08/17 540C was in at McGlasgow at the end of July for 5th year service, and a good check over given the 5 paintwork warranty would expire after August.

When it was in for the service, three panels were noted to have the initial stages of corrosion, both front wings and driver door. All approved to be replaced under warranty. Parts not available for a few weeks so I took the car home and dropped it off again once parts arrived.

Door and wings were then changed out and unfortunately when McGlasgow were cleaning the car up ready for handover, they spotted another spot on the OSR panel. Fairly large panel, and fairly minor bubble. This was spotted end of September. You can guess what's coming here.. not covered under warranty, even though the first three panels were. As you can imagine I wasn't happy, one I would have hoped this would be been picked up earlier but also expected McLaren to agree to cover it given it was found one month after the paint warranty expired.

Cost to replace panel - £4900 + VAT.

McGlasgow tried their best and a few emails and phone calls to McLaren Client Services, we got an agreed 75% goodwill payment. Which being honest still isn't good enough for me but didn't have much choice. Had to be done or it would have needed done when I decide to sell. So £1500 from me ontop of the previous bill.

On the positive side, the car is now on 15k miles and looks brand new!

McLaren have a long way to go before they can consider themselves looking after customers aswell as other marques do, such as Aston Martin and Porsche. Even Land Rover are better than this. McGlasgow gave been great throughout but McLaren themselves have been poor IMO. Not what you'd expect from a prestige marque.

It's been enough to put me off. I love the car, but this McLaren will be my last.

So £6,000 to replace one panel …that’s a joke frankly at least you got a discount but it’s really off putting if you want to own one past 5 years old. Is there a way to repair these panels without replacing them completely ?
I know Aston have had these issues too but not as prevalent …what about Lambo and Ferrari?
I'm sure there is a simpler way, but guess for £1500 I was getting a whole new panel so was a bit of a no brainer rather than attempt repair then worry about the rest of the panel.

Very frustrating

Sorry to hear this. After what overall seems to have been a very enthusiastic and enjoyable ownership.

What are they saying is the issue regarding the paint? as it doesn't seem to be consistent but yet is common?!

Some cars having corrosion happen even on the repairs I believe?!? So I presume its something to do with the metal panel being of poor quality and has some sort of trapped moisture?
Moisture during the prep stage I believe?

Don't get me wrong, I am still very enthusiastic about it. It's the best car I've owned. But the aftersales from McLaren HQ is pretty terrible given how common this issue is. They'll just scare away current owners, and potential ones!

Sorry to hear that Justin, and certainly bad taste that mclaren U.K. won’t honour the warranty a month out ! When It was clearly there during the initial warranty period.

I have had both rear 1/4’s, front wings and both lower door appliqués replaced, luckily when it was under 5 years old.
Let’s hope the new panels don’t have the same issue !

Are you planning to hang onto the car ?
Yeah I'll be keeping it for now. Like I said it's almost brand new with all these panels replaced, and it would be ashame to move it on after spending all this money on it. I just won't be buying another.

AyBee said:
If they're panel replacing and you're paying, do you get to keep the old one? Might be worth asking so you can recover some of your £1500 selling it to someone who's crashed one?
That's actually an interesting point and not sure if that would have been an option. To be honest the logistics and hassle of storing it would probably outweigh the benefits of then selling it on. I'd imagine they'd just scrap the bubbling panels?

Davyt said:
At what point/year did McLaren stop having paint issues with all models ? Or haven’t we reached that yet ??
No idea.. was this an issue on the 12C / 650S? Doesn't seem to be as wide spread at least on the previous gens..

It's a shame as I'm a potential new owner and I'm certainly getting colder feet and think this confirma that I'll have to always factor the cost of an extended warranty into the purchase and ownership cost equation.

Not to derail the thread too much but what's your GT experience been like in terms of driving dynamics and feel? They've come down to a similar price range to an AMG GTR I'm considering and wanfed to know if they still give enough feedback and involvement to enjoy driving them
Unfortunately the extended warranty doesn't cover the paintwork

I had a further chat with the painter today that's doing the McLaren repaint I asked him what he thought of the inability of McLaren to paint the cars. Painting Ali is no issue for him he said that the factory cars don't have enough paint not he edge parts hence the areas get chips and just corrode because there isn't enough protection on them in the form of paint.
Surely, surely it can't be something as simple as that..

Certainly doesn't seem as wide spread. I've never had it before on any car.

Your point on the leading edge is interesting, both my wings and door were all on the leading edge but this OSR panel that wasn't under warranty, wasn't.. it was just above the reflector so quite an odd place for it to start. Definitely not prone to a stone chip there

Don't get me wrong I totally understand McLaren need draw the line somewhere, but a month after the warranty expires straight after three other panels have just been replaced seems a bit short to me. It didn't just happen with the space of a month.

More worryingly for us owners is, it's just going to put off new people coming to the used McLaren market. Which won't do residuals any good.

On a different note, I spotted a Lotus Emira out in the wild yesterday, looked absolutely fantastic. Very McLaren/ Ferrari esque

I'm just being honest Matty, that was the whole reason for this thread.. You're right though, my thoughts have changed in the recent 6-12 months.

If McLaren looked after their customers a bit better, cheaper warranty, longer paint guarantee, available paint codes, supported Indies etc and all the rest it would make the brand much stronger. More people would buy, propping up depreciation meaning us owners can move up the McLaren fleet easier.
