Yeah agree, I've lost a bit (good bit!) on mine but I bought at 6 months old and have had it almost 5 years so it's to be expected. I'd say it's retained 65% of it's new value after 5 years. Thats actually pretty good.

Sure it's not on par with a GT3 or 458 residual wise but it would probably be unfair to make that comparison given how young McLaren are.

I am still absolutely delighted with the car.

I just wish the after care was a bit better. Current customers should be number one priority to look after. As we'll be the ones likely to trade up, spread good word etc

Morning, been a while since I posted anything in here but not a huge amount to report as the 540C hasn't moved for about 8 weeks due to work and weather..

I've actually been driving around my wife's Cayenne mostly, and due to a temp sensor issue with it, it's been driving almost in limp mode.. so no acceleration at all. We've had about 2 weeks with jt like that until the sensor was avao. Must admit, Porsche are fantastic to deal with. They just seem to get customer service right. I was in for a full morning and had work to do, they even gave me my own little office to use my laptop in. Courtesy cars, coffees, check ups etc. Very impressed.

i took the 540C out this week and forgot just how quick it is, felt like a rocketship in comparison! It almost made me realise how much I still adore this car. Not everyone will agree with this but to me it is such an event to drive, at any speed. This week it's been used for office visits, playgroup drop offs and Aldi shopping runs (cost of living and all that!). Fantastic. Looking to get another Skye tripped booked.

As I'm sure a few of us do, I've spent far too much time on auto trader these last few months looking at anything and everything. From Clio RS 197s as a runaround, through RS4/RS6, Range Rover Sports and even a couple of 600LTs, which I did crunch some numbers on but not quite sure even I can make the man maths work.

I'm still procrastinating over tyre choice. Likely I'll go PS4S if I'd commit to keeping it, P Zeros otherwise.

When the Cayenne was in the dealer they had a huge amount of stock in, quite surprising over winter but maybe getting ready for a busy Spring. A lot of GT products, turbos etc.. must admit the Turbo is quite appealing.

What do you think of all those GTs compared to your McLaren?

Porsches always felt a step below to me, visually. McLarens feel exotic, proper supercar. Not just because doors.
Interesting question. The newer models of GT3 has always interested me purely because its so highly regarded. They do have a certain something about them, interior quality and fit and finish look to be extremely high.

I think the new 911 (991 onwards) are fantastic looking, and I actually prefer them without all the wings etc. It would be a GT3 touring for me if I ever went down that route, and was able to actually buy one!

I've driven a 997 GT3 before on track, and wasn't particularly blown away. The engine is special but wasn't a patch on my Exige to drive.

None of them excite me like a McLaren though. I'd say I appreciate a nice 911 but absolutely love the Mac's.

Another update, and another big bill unfortunately!

First up it was the coolant.. I had left the car in my garage for a couple of weeks when away, and noticed a blue pool of fluid when I went to take it out. Coming from just in front of the passenger front wheel.. I was really hoping it wasn't the radiator. AA came out and confirmed it was a hose but they weren't willing to repair on the driveway so it was recovered to McGlasgow again.. The had noticed some pitting on the coolant pipework also, so decided to replace it rather than risk another leak.

When it was in I also asked Ricky to refresh the Aircon, and frustratingly the pipework burst when pressurising.. so that also needed replacing. and the front bonnet catch was not working right. It wasn't releasing the secondary catch.. so again, another addition to the bill!

Perhaps most frustratingly though, was that the two front springs were also noticed to be cracked. Similar to the rears last year which I replaced, but this time I decided not to replace the full damper unit. The damper itself was fine, just the spring cracked. McLaren don't currently supply these on their own (£1800 for the full damper unit per side) so I'd like to give a huge shout out and thanks to Thorney for supplying springs (£300 all in!). Saved me over £3k alone.

Total bill just over £3.5k

Tyres were also due to be replaced and opted for the Michelin PS4S. Early days with them yet I'm still scrubbing them in. That was £1100 fitted on the driveway.

On the plus side. The car is now pretty much like new. In the last year it's had five new panels, all new tyres, coolant and air con pipepwork replaced, new springs/dampers.. now just time to start using it again!

I promise I'll get out with it soon for some decent pics. I've just lent it to a colleague to drive round the lakes for his honeymoon, so at least it's getting some use...

Good points, not that I'm aware of but probably something to look at during its next service.

Vermilion red is a fantastic colour but really hard to photograph it well to show it off.

This is probably the best picture which shows it well, has a lovely orange fleck through it

Glasgow had a vermillion red 765 spider earlier this year for sale.

Never seen that colour in the flesh before and it was proper stunning and really popped in the sunshine.

I really like your car Justin; you would be hard going to replace that.

All supercars will always have supercar maintenance bills every so often, and you have taken care of a good amount of items; be a shame to do all that just for a new owners benefit!
Wow wish I'd seen that. Saying that it's been a while since I've physically been at McGlasgow as the car has been transported up and down the last few times. Always like a trip there for a walk about the car park.

You're right though it will be very hard to replace. The only thing I would consider is a new V8 Defender. Nothing else would really take my fancy and would be a complete change of car.. There isn't much out there for similar money that would give the same thrill.

Tbf it could have been worse.. You keeping it now?
My wife is already asking when I'm advertising it now that it's back.. but agree with the above, it's ashame to spend all that money and not get the benefit.. on the other hand it's and ideal time to sell up.

Well, last and final update from me I'm afraid. I've just sold my 540C.

Freshly back from it's 6th service (£1450 from McGlasgow) with all new tyres and suspension, the car was in fantastic condition. Coupled with the lack of use over the last few years it's been getting harder to justify and although I'm sad to see it go, it felt like the right time to move it on.

It's been sold privately to one of those online competition pages, so might buy a few tickets on the off chance to win it back. The sale all happened quite quickly and not sure what direction to go next but was made an offer I thought was too good to turn down, or I'd be committed to keeping it another year over winter.

Overall, utterly fantastic car and a real joy to own. I will miss it dearly.

McGlasgow - Ricky (and previously Scott) and his team in service were superb throughout my ownership, really did go the extra mile and deserve the credit they get through the MOC.

Nice to know the thread has been of some use. I've also enjoyed it and sure I'll look back and read through it all sometime.

Sad times Justin, but as above , this thread was one of the reasons I bought mine.
I still haven’t bought a replacement yet, do you have anything lined up ?
My main reason for selling was lack of use, due to children/dog duties. It only covered 3k miles in two years, a real shame. I guess priorities change being a parent! hehe genuinely not sure what I'll do next.. I'm in three minds, first is to buy something to run around in for a few months until I make up my mind.. Second is middle of the road and go hot hatch, fast estate, Golf R, RS4, Defender etc.. M3 touring is probably the dream, but can't get over buying one would cost more than I got for the 540C.. or thirdly would be a real change of scenery and go Electric. Although I test drove a Tesla Model Y yesterday, lovely car but not sure I'm ready to make that move.

Ps where can I buy tickets from ?
Ace Competitions.. it'll be live in a few weeks. Around £4.99 a ticket..

Sorry to see you go.

As others have said, this thread was a big part of me deciding to buy the first 650.

I'm wondering how the sale process went - if a buyer told me they were one of those car competition things my scam alert would be very strong!
I'll miss the McLaren chat for sure, but actually looking forward to replacing it with something I'll actually use.

Sales process was honestly the easiest sale I've ever had. And significantly higher than McLaren London offered me, I'm talking five figures higher. No drive needed. Although I guess the profit margin is also significantly higher through one of these sites.

Interesting the alternative is £65k cash.

I'm guessing that would be similar to what they've been offered as Trade is the winner chooses the cash?
Yeah I'd assume so, although believe these sites often want the winner to take the cash alternative as there is another bit more profit in selling it back to trade. So at a guess they've maybe got a bid of £70-75k, and could squeeze their profits a bit further if they car isnt taken.
