Hi, I went to visit essex prestige autos on Friday and have agreed a deal on the MP4-12C they have. Reg No MC12 MPC. Does anyone on here know anything about the vehicle and history or have any experience of dealing with essex prestige post sale? There were a few little issues with it but we finally got there.

No experience with this garage but their is the standard issue that they can’t give you a McLaren Warranty unless it is on SOR with an existing warranty or you take it to be checked at McLaren; I heard about one this week that required £17k to get it back to the condition needed for the warranty to go on.

They are lovely cars but there are some potentially very expensive issues so I would personally buy privately/SOR for a warrantied car or, ideally, buy from a main dealer.

McLaren Hatfield have just taken my spider in SOR but they also have a very nice and well priced coupe in there for the same money as the one you are looking at (if you factor in the £5k warranty included). That would be a no brainier for me.

Congrats on your new car.

Never heard of Essex prestige (good or bad) , it worth joining the mclaren uk owners facebook group - 357 members - many active.

The number plate seems familiar, so could have belonged to a member on there.

Just be very careful with them.

A friend of mine bought a car from them, drove it 300 miles and had it inspected and one of the shocks had failed (leaking badly).
They've told him to F off basically and now it's going through the finance company etc to get it sorted.

Has it been off the road since September last year?

Search and read the reviews for the lot. There is a recurring theme!

Thanks for the info, sale was agreed Friday but no deposit paid yet so I can back out still. I wanted to put the feelers out here. I requested all the paperwork they had to carry out some due diligence. I did read the reviews which to be honest are far from glowing. There were little things that did annoy me with them, advert said 18k miles, I got there and it has 19,150 miles. I asked why, well it came in at 18,900 miles and the owner rounded it down to 18k. Mmmm, yeah ok. Few stone chips and the 3 month warranty they offer with it seems fairly worthless. But it was a nice vehicle and the interior was just what I was looking for. I'm sure it cant all be bad stock.

Would mclaren charge for doing the vehicle checks needed to see if it passes for a mclaren warranty? If I said to the dealer I will only go forward with the sale on that condition that may be a way of making sure things are ok.

You would be better off buying from an owner so any warranty can be transferred. In addition most owners are enthusiasts and you will no doubt get the full detail on the cars history.

I'm a member of the owners group and there are a few guys thinking of selling as I asked for a neighbour last week.

Put a wanted ad up on the Facebook owners group classifieds. Its open to anyone whereas the group page is not.

Good luck!

Whatever car you buy, I would say McLaren warranty is a must. I have never let mine lapse and it has paid dividends. If you buy a car with no McLaren warranty, they will charge you an inspection fee before they warranty it - around £700 if my memory is correct. They will then want to fix any issues they find with the car prior to implementing the warranty and obviously you will be forking out for those repairs. The warranty itself is then a whisker under £5000 a year...

Cheap car, but here is the rub. No McLaren warranty which is £5K plus the inspection fee PLUS anything they may find wrong?

You could have a result and add around £5,500 to the purchase price and all is good OR possibly not.

Look at Alistair Bols for good examples or an owner from the FB page, a few are looking to sell. I have a 2012 Volcano Red with all the right carbon bits, sports exhaust and I reckon it is £100K ish if I were selling, but mine has 10 months Mac Warranty and a new service being performed this week & a car cover and a charger and, and, and, all the bits that cost money!!!

At 20,000 miles they need the clutch oil and filter changed which is £600 on top of the £1500 service, so when is it due a service??

No mention of sports exhaust on this one? 2nd hand they are still £2 - 3K if it doesn't have one, you will wish it had and then spend the money...

I am not saying back out, I am saying look at the options available. If you are happy with the knowledge that you can get a warranty and it has all the right bits, then do it. I bloody love mine biggrin

I took the advice and am glad I did, now the proud owner of this with manufacturers warranty. Excellent job by Mclaren Glasgow. Only driven it briefly but wow, it certainly picks its feet up. Looking forward to some nice weather so I can get it out on some of our lovely north west roads.

Lovely! I had a look at that when I was in McGlasgow (well, I think it's the same car) as I was very tempted.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with it. I'm loving mine so far.

Congrats and a great car. I picked up my first McLaren just over a month ago (also a 540c) and been awesome to drive the few times i've had it out since. Cannot wait for drier roads, the sun out and just planning a European road trip for the summer.

Thanks, they do feel very special. People go absolutely nuts when they see it. The alarm decided to go off last night completely of its own accord, not sure why?. These kind of things always happen when its pitch black at 3am. I also am struggling to get the front vehicle lift to go back down consistently, goes up easily. Minor gripes aside I just cant wait for some better weather to properly test (thrash) it, would love to hear from any other owners in the North West.

Nice car OP. On my second 570 from McGlasgow, great to deal with.

For the lift, always push lever up first before pushing down to lower the car.

Yeah, you need to move the stalk up to go to the lift mode, then move it down to lower the car. Or cycle through the menu to get to the lift operation
