Resprayed rear
Discussion
So managed to find someone in the North East to inspect. Only material issue is that they think the car has had a resprayed back end, but no indication of accident damage so they think probably stone chips. Does t sound like there's evidence of this work on the history file so may have been a smart repair or something. Anyway, I'm getting photos through shortly.
If it's been done to a good standard, is this something you think I should worry about or take as a reason not to proceed? If it hasn't been done well I suppose I could use this as a negotiation point, how much would a high quality respray cost? We are talking a volcano colour unfortunately.
Many thanks for any swift responses! I need to move fast

Hello Mr Cod, great name by the way. My immediate thought was that if it required a backend respray due to stone chips then surely the front would too. If the front hasn't been done or needed doing then the back must be for some other reason. Not trying to put a downer on it just a thought.
There is a story behind the name haha
Turns out the oral report was completely confused...having now seen the written report and pictures turns out the main damage is stone chips to the edges of the side air intakes. I guess this is always going to happen if no PPF.
Anybody else have this/happy to live with it?
I'm guessing a respray of volcano red is going to cost a lot!

From personal experience I've had a few cars and lived with the gravel rash. You tend to pay for it when it comes to trade in value as the dealer will take into account prep costs. My last car had the ppf and it is night and day. So much so the one I have just bought didn't have the ppf so I made it part of the deal to trade. I would suggest you use it as a bargaining chip. [sorry]

If this is the one for sale at the Bentley dealership it doesn't immediately look like it needs any paintwork IMHO.
As you say, cars without PPF will pick up stone chips, if you feel it needs painting then what I understand is only McLaren approved bodyshops have the paint codes so it will be expensive. You will then need to get PPF fitted otherwise it'll very quickly get some nice new paintchips....
If it was me, I'd be either accepting that it's got a little road-rash and buying it at an agreeable price, or going to look at it and drive it myself, or buying one closer to home.
Only you know how important perfection is, and how much you are prepared to pay for that.
Good luck with the purchase.

Very little paperwork with the car, just its service book and a couple of manuals. Should there be anything else? I suppose if it has been under warranty as it's a 2014 I'm not going to see a ream of receipts, but I thought there might be a build sheet, leather bound manual- or something more than three small softback manuals.
Any thoughts on any obvious ommisions?

Volcano red is a pretty expensive paint to respray and it isn't easy to do properly so keep a good eye out for colour matching. I would say almost every 12c will have been repainted especially the older ones for all manner of reasons so that in itself isn't an issue. I would definitely want the undertrays off thoughfor a proper inspection.
Even on the production line McLaren had problems with Volcano red & orange, some times it might take 3 or 4 different panels of the same colour to get the correct colour match to the main bodyshell before final fitment on the car. As said before, they are very very difficult colours to paint, so even at a McLaren authorised paint shop it might not be a 100% colour match.
