720s Below 200K Already
Discussion
Didn’t the 599 experience similar depreciation when it was launched? I think the 720s depreciation illustrates the true nature of the market these days rather than it not being desirable. I was never a fan of McLaren but the 720s is pretty and if they become cheap enough it would be hard to resist.
I think there's always a market, it just depends upon when people feel that they reach a point when they represent value. I have just bought a 68 reg 720 which I felt represented reasonable value (that's obviously relative, as in my view they're still bl&*dy expensive cars) and we have Brexit and snow and everything else depressing values currently, but hopefully it'll be fun in the summer!

If ever anyone doubted that there is sod all interest in these cars, this is your proof....catastrophic depreciation in a matter of months. There is truly no demand for these cars.
Congratulations. I have NEVER heard such illogical, irrelevant rubbish in my entire life. You truly are a complete moron and don’t deserve a supercar. If you’d done any research you’d realise it is basically a one off distressed seller. If ever anyone doubted that there is sod all interest in these cars, this is your proof....catastrophic depreciation in a matter of months. There is truly no demand for these cars.
Please find a cliff and jump off. Me and my fellow McLaren owners will be happy to give you a push. Please ask. Believe me. Many of us feel the same.
Meanwhile I’m on 8,300 miles on my 720S which I bought from new and absolutely love.
I’d remove yourself from the internet if I were you and wonder where exactly you failed at life...
Kind regards.

1. Did you bother to look at the spec of that car? If ever anyone doubted that there is sod all interest in these cars, this is your proof....catastrophic depreciation in a matter of months. There is truly no demand for these cars.
2. Romans have just sold a red one with higher miles with a higher asking price. But you shouldn’t let facts get in the way of a good throwaway statement...
I’m not an owner but absolutely love the 720.

It’s not that, it’s the fact that TP321 has a pathological hatred of all things McLaren.
If you bother to look back at his post history you can see that for yourself, I was only wondering the other day we haven’t had the usual vile vitriol from him for a while.
Still good to know he’s still out there

I'm not worried about depreciation. It seems those who are worried are mostly non-owners. I knew what I was getting into and life goes on.
As for haters, notice how they are often the ones who don't reveal anything about their cars? TP321 and his Sinclair C5 is a good example.

...so back to the facts.
£172k from a dealer, means that the trade are only offering £150k for these - 2018 car which would have retailed £225-230k new a few months ago. Shocking.
As for some high mileage ones with dubious paint schemes....
As many have pointed out, it’s a great car for the £150k mark - wouldn’t mind one myself

Nearly 20 years ago I remember the time a I bought a car called a Porsche 993 GT2. Porsche had trouble selling them, dealers did not want them, they only managed to sell 7 in the whole of the UK! The idiots that did buy them (like me) were facing catastrophic depreciation, in a matter of months! I was like "I don't get it, these cars are amazing to drive", so I just kept it and enjoyed it.If ever anyone doubted that there is sod all interest in these cars, this is your proof....catastrophic depreciation in a matter of months. Fast forward and I've had a 720s for over a year now, currently on winter tyres, and I have to say this is one of my favorite cars of all time. I have no bias, I drive Porsche/Ferrari too, and the 720s is pretty damn unique with what it brings to the table. Rejoice in the fact, like a GT2, you can pick them up for reasonable money, and one day they will be coveted for the amazing cars they are. You know, like the depreciation disastors such as the M3 CSL, 430 Scuderia, Cosworths, etc. that were worth squat in the early years of their life, until their driving DNA became proven, and then desirable.
Great drivers cars are like fine wine, the good ones just keep getting better with age. Except unlike wine, you can enjoy cars and still sell them when the market does wake up! If it does not, fk it, just enjoy driving the crap out of it! 720's are pretty special.

Ha I really enjoyed that balanced perspective. Impressive stable and great history. I wish I had the foresight (and the cash at the time) to keep my droop snoot RS2000, RS1600i, whale tail Cosworth and even my Mk1 RS Escort Turbo, but l really did enjoy driving them at the time...
Life moves on, but driving pleasure and memories are permanent, along with the pictures and dodgy haircuts captured for posterity...
Thanks for bringing some warmth to a chilly Sunday morning.

You are being disingenuous with your comparisons.
GT2's, Scuderia's and CSL's are the special edition range toppers of the respective models and as such demand a premium.
The 720S is the standard model and therefore will not appreciate in the same manner.
Game face, with respect I think you are missing the point here. All the cars quoted, including my RS history, were indeed at the time a premium product to buy, but equally had very little or no premium when resold at the time. It is only with the passage of time and historical perspective that they have become more valuable and sought after, and of course a growing number of sad 50+ year olds with the disposable income to recapture their youth GT2's, Scuderia's and CSL's are the special edition range toppers of the respective models and as such demand a premium.
The 720S is the standard model and therefore will not appreciate in the same manner.
My particular favourite to recapture would be an XR2 with pepper pot wheels
I believe my point is valid.
The halo models appreciated. The standard models have not. Nor will the 720.
I'm not knocking the car. The styling has really grown on me. The speed is other worldly. I'd probably own one except for the fact that they sound so dull in comparison to my current cars.
