Hi Rambo,

Poor English aside, some clarifications for you:

- I only lost £5k on the 720s. My point was made to those asking why I sold it, was that it would now be £50-60k if I had kept. And that sale was a total fluke via Facebook. Dealers didn't want it. And it had constant issues.
- I haven't "peed off Lamborghini". SVJ will be my 5th Lambo order and get on well with my dealer, Edinburgh (great bunch). Never do any press or influencer stuff with Lambo anyway. There is no HQ relationship.
- I could stroll in and order a 600LT, so could my mum, or my mates dog. They will churn as many as they can. You have been sucked in, bless you.

Cheers
Thanks for the clarification of your massive £5k loss Dave but who is Rambo ?
The jokes seem to have been lost on me

How many thousands of 600LTs do you think they will make then ?

Jeez... I suspect you are right. And it's been so nice on here the past few weeks.
The use of “would of” instead of “would have” gives the game away. Still, it’s easy to identify and ignore now smile
Jules, looks like you've got another profile to report to his employer rofl

I think you have to look at McLaren Automotive and the group as a whole (and the whole Ron Dennis saga). McLaren Automotive are profitable, and revenues are roughly doubling every two years or so.
From the audited financial statements of McLaren Automotive Limited:

Profit & Loss Account 2017 £000s 2016 £000s
Turnover 526,916 527,340
Gross Profit 88,945 131,469
Operating Profit/(Loss) (33,152) 7,689
(Loss)/Profit before tax (42,953) 3,471
(Loss)/Profit after tax (42,563) 4,930

Automotive is subsidizing the F1 team at the moment, and that is where the Bahrainis are pouring in their money.
I very much doubt that.
I don't know the underlying costs turning that profit into a loss, maybe a strategic decision to write something off or invest in something? But a base profit of £88 Million. They make around 3,500 cars a year. This equates to £25k profit per car. Maybe not quite in Ferrari territory yet, but that seems OK to me for such a young car manufacturer.

Maybe they need to sell more fridge magnets and models like a certain Italian car company. Or how about giving them a bit of time, its still early days. I and many others are very very happy with them. Nobody with half a brain buys a McLaren expecting no depreciation (most people with the money to buy one have more than half a brain).
Oh no, more facts.

Gross profit is a vanity number in any business.
It’s not the “base” profit. It’s before many of the costs of actually running the business.

In the case of a manufacturing operation like McLaren Automotive I would expect Gross Profit to be:

Turnover

Less:

Direct costs of production (i.e. raw materials, sub assemblies, contracted work and labour),
Factory overhead (the previously calculated cost of machinery etc. per hour multiplied by utilised hours),
Amortised development costs (the R&D cost per unit previously capitalised on the balance sheet)

The financial statements only mention that amortised development costs have increased by £10m since the previous year.

It isn't really clear why Cost of Sales on a virtually identical number of cars (similar sales mix too) would otherwise have jumped by £40m+.

So from a similar turnover, they have managed to decimate their gross profit as their manufacturing costs have soared....

The web is where people go to moan and complain. The vast majority have minimal to no problems. My 570S has been brilliant. The buying experience from McLaren was better than being disrespected at the Ferrari dealer (even after being a multiple Ferrari owner).

McLaren's are different. Their performance and styling is next level. I think McLaren buyers are guys that have been around the block... had Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, etc, and the McLaren represents something different, less common and possibly a better driving experience. I also think the owners tend to be more hard core drivers.

Overall, I'm thrilled with the experience.

I have no axe to grind in this debate but surely the fact that McLaren feels the need to use an "influencer" (or "influencers") to help shift their products speaks volumes. I can't imagine Ferrari need to (but am prepared to be shot down in flames if I'm wrong). If I was running McLaren I'd look at jumping on the SUV bandwagon like Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, allegedly Ferrari etc etc to use the SUV to drive profits and thus be able to restrict production of the two seaters to a level where there is a genuine waiting list and thus protect residual values.

Sorry but Ferrari play the same game as all the other brands. Every Tom,Dick and Harry You tuber is invited to their launches and each one one then gives a glowing review in their own indomitable style.

You can’t blame either side. Free boondoggle and opportunity to drive a brand new Ferrari model and huge exposure to millions of viewers for Ferrari.

And Ferrari need to. My son’s generation appear to have no loyalty to Ferrari and no respect for the heritage. Nothing lasts forever.
