Recently purchased a 650s spider from Bristol Mclaren. Not started it for a few days but noticed this morning, on start up from cold on normal settings, that it sounds quite load mechanically for the first few seconds after cold start. Soon quietens down and any subsequent starts are much quieter. Has anyone noticed this with these cars, is it normal? Anyone had any issues with this problem?

Can't share any experience with a McLaren (unfortunately), but the BMW M4 does exactly as you describe too.

Hi, recently purchased this car from Rybrook, started from cold this morning in normal settings and thought it sounded a bit harsh for the first few seconds then quietened down. Subsequent restart quiet. Is this normal? has anyone experienced any problems with these engines? Thanks.
PS New to these forums so hoping i am doing this correctly.

I had one but don't remember any issues like this. It will probably be noisier from cold anyway because it will rev up a little more, I presume. If it settles and ticks over okay I wouldn't worry about it.

Just seen the pic in the other forum. Beautiful car.

No McLaren experience but normal on Audi R8’s.

ECU is responsible, I think it keeps some exhaust valves open for 30-60 seconds beforehand closing them?

Perfectly normal on cold start cycle.

Most higher end sports/GT cars do it.

The R8 V10 is the same (vacuum controlled flaps in the exhaust, 20min job to alter so open all time)

Thanks for the replies, probably nothing to worry about, has got the sport exhaust so that may be a factor, i`ll check it again in a few days when weather cheers up a bit.

Don't know if I'm imagining it, but I recall reading somewhere that the cats get bypassed for a few seconds on startup (presumably to preserve them), before everything quietens down on idle.

Could be the case, just sounds a bit more mechanical than exhaust, came across a noise that was similar years ago when ford released the first Sierra Cosworth. Looked into it at the time and the explanation was the split skirt pistons would rattle a little during warm up and quieten down once warm. In that case no action was necessary. Was just looking to see if anyone had found a similar issue in these engines or if it was something that i need to take a closer look at. Thanks for the replies.

Mine does this (12c)
It sounds like the tappets are rattling their tits off for 2-3 seconds then as the oil pressure builds its goes away. Makes me shriek every time I cold start it. Took it to McManchester and they said ‘they all do that’ something to do with the dry sump.

If you’re on Facebook then join the owners page. Looks more info on there than PH. I have a video of mine on there making the noise, would be good to compare!

There have been a few cam dephaser failures too, I’m convinced mine is more than McManchester are letting on too.

My 12c would sometimes start with an awful ‘misfire’ for up to 30 seconds. It would stutter and ‘bang’ quite horrifically. I sent a video to the dealer who said it was normal and could be the result of a short previous drive (putting it in the garage, for example). Also, was told if you keep the drivers door open during start up, the revs increase and help with fuel supply, if I remember correctly.

Might be unrelated to what you’re describing...........

Upon startup my 570 is nice and loud for about 1 minute. Its not a mechanical noise though, the engine just seems to run at slightly higher revs for a while, and the exhaust sounds unsilenced (maybe some kind of cat bypass?), I expect this is to help the cats warm up more quickly.
