Hi, I had a test drive at the weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it. However, there was a low level electric hum coming from the steering column and the dealer said that all McLarens have this low level hum and whine with its steering. I’m sure I would get used to it, but is the dealer statement correct in your opinion?

I've not heard such a noise.

on the car i drove, if you didn't touch the wheel, no noise. Ie at lights. as soon as the tiniest input goes through the wheel, the hum kicks in. slightly annoying when in traffic.

Never noticed that, on any McLaren. I'll listen out for it next drive.

You're going to notice it, and now you'll notice it every single drive, and it'll drive you insane hehe

Sounds like the symptom of a clock spring wearing.

Never heard such a thing.

Steering is hydraulic anyway, not electric.

Hi, yes, purchased a new spider. Pick it up Saturday. Great to hear no one can hear the same noise I heard in the car used for test drive. If I hear it mine I’ll be sure to post!

Nope no noise or vibration from the steering in mine at all either. The only time I've heard anything odd like that is if you activate the front lift & turn the steering at the same time as its raising up as I believe they are both run off the power steering hydraulic pump.

570 Spider is a fantastic car I'm sure you will love it.

I took mine out for a roof down run out yesterday on a 6c afternoon, it was a treat to drive her. Such a fab all rounder, can use it as a normal car where the first class visibility allows you to place it on the road very well, the heater is nice & powerful roof down with very well placed vents warming your hands(lovely) an excellent stereo (B&W), spacious cockpit ,its a very civilised place to be but then change the mood stiffen her up for more control when pressing on & she goes like stink.

Its a very enjoyable drive as opposed to the anodyne bore fest of the usual Porsche's those seemingly more worried about their finances seem to constantly extol the virtues of. As a drivers car its excellent with first class steering giving great feel for grip & driver involvement & feedback, nice solid brake pedal (after taking up the first bit of dead travel) rather than the usual feel free over servoed stuff you get & it actually moves around a bit when you give it the big un keeping you on your toes as its not totally planted & all the better for it on the excitement stakes.

Puts a smile on my face every time i drive it, I always look back after parking up & think wow what a car & feel lucky to own such a thing, enjoy.

From test drive to ownership in 2 weeks. Can’t wait til Saturday. Just getting the wrap sorted, insurance is done (NFU) and hopefully DVLA will be able to register it by Friday ready for collection. Sadly it’s due to honk with rain but ho hum! I’m sure it won’t dull the senses from what this group has experienced in all conditions.
