Hi, I haven’t protected paint in the past relying on just respraying if chips got too bad. Dealer telling me mclaren paint is not available for touch ups. On verge of buying brand new (dealer stock) car but may ask for wrap. Is this a) worth the 1400 (front end only and mirrors I think) and b) do dealers discount or even throw it in to get you over the line? It’s black Friday week so you never know!

That’s what I’m thinking. Dealer car but good spec. £32k of options on it but price to me at 165. I know I’m going to be 35k down within 100 miles...hence why I’m trying to minimise the gap a little further. I’m in no immediate rush but have cash to spend so we’ll see what happens. Is the wrap worth getting irrespective of who pays?

Absolutely worth it. The front end is very low and picks up a lot of stones.

I've got PPF on mine and it still looks immaculate

Definitely worth it but DO NOT get the dealer to arrange it! Will most likely be done on site and will very likely not be prepped properly. On hand-over get it straight to a decent detailer (they'll normally arrange transport if requested) who will do it properly. Topaz and Paintshield are two I have used, both have good reps.

As already said its pretty much something you must do & coming from Porsches not something I'd considered before as they are not crazy money to repaint.

Full front via paint shield (who were excellent by the way, did a super job) was circa £2200 ish from memory. Yes its a lot of money but 3000 miles on the car has not one mark on it & its totally invisible unless you are on your hands & knees looking around the edges for it.

What colour is it? It's only the Volcano and pearlescent colours that can't be touched up. Solid white and carbon black for instance, are fine. fine

PPF is one of the best investments you can buy on your car, definitely worth it especially on a car that sits so low. It is pretty expensive but theres a reason for that

Same colour as mine, amazingly the sparkle of the paint is actually better to my eyes under the film than without it.

super. sounds like i need it! I'm in East Herts so maybe i try Paintshield as they are in Peterborough. Do folk usually go for Standard, All front, or all over? Would think standard is fine but what do i know!!

20 years ago you bought a car, drove it, enjoyed it, washed it on a sunday morning.

Now it comes with a package of anxiety about ridiculously expensive plastic film (seriously how can it be £2/3k in time and materials to do this) and stone chips. As for washing, well, you'd better have 2 buckets, snow foam blah blah blah. The more you find out the more anxiety and stress there is.

Is this progress I ask myself?

I know! I’m positively frazzled by the whole suoercar experience. Makes me think fondly of the Datsun Cherry I had back in the 80’s.

Mclaren Hatfield has said they use the following. Any experience from owners on this forum?

I'd recommend KDS Keltec.

They did PPF and GTechniq on mine:

There are lots of wrapping companies springing up. Makes me think the time & materials cost leaves a lot of profit. All they need are a few youfs, a garage space and acres of sticky plastic

Great taste in cars wink

Yes the i8 is a fantastic daily use car.

Consider the 600LT and 720S as your next McLaren. Both are great, but very different to each other.

I'm down for a 7xxLT, which will replace my 720S. My i8 is staying.

Back on topic, I wish I'd known about PPF and ceramic when I bought my i8, as I'd have had both applied to that car too.
