There will be a lot less 12C's on the market then, because it's just too good to sell at 70 or 80K, unless you are desperate of course. I would rather keep mine , stick another 25K miles on it and enjoy it while I can. There is nothing out there currently that comes close for the money and sadly the values have been talked down, when they should be talked up.

Great cars, great value and much more reliable than people would make you think. I can't be bothered with the warranty even though Thorney has one for under £3K, because with independents now available, the price of repairs will reduce significantly.

I was speaking to a guy who's head of after sales service for one large dealer who have many brands under their umbrella from Aston to Lambo and of course McLaren. He said that from his experience McLaren are where Aston were 15 yrs ago in terms of reliability...I wouldn't doubt his observation given his experience. You'd hope that McLaren can only keep improving and more indos come online to take the stress off the current service network.

From everything I've observed, indeed Mclaren's have had a problem with early fails related to getting the manual manufacturing line up to speed, and also stacked tolerances on certain items.

But once those were/are sorted - they seem as solid as anything else. Similarly, my first 2009 V12 Vantage had a shed load of issues - seemed like one every month for 2 years - but the 2012 CB edition I now have is rock solid.

I sell a warranty.

Get the cars inspected and you wont need one.

There.

I ran my 12C for 2.5 years and 14k miles. It cost me nothing to run over and above a VW Golf other than the warranty, which gave me peace of mind. £5k pa for a supercar plus around £7.5k pa depreciation per year seems like a good deal to me. The servicing, consumables, consumption, tax & insurance are not over the top. My B7 RS4 cost me £300 a year more to insure than my 12C when I ran them side by side. The RS4 averaged 16mpg, the 12C 28mpg. My F355 cost me £5,000 to service my 12C £900. I would not run a McLaren without a factory or Thorney warranty for peace of mind but those should be your only extraordinary costs and can be factored in.

I will be getting another 12C next year, I have a some new toys to play with this year. When I do i will be seeking out a high spec early swipe car preferably one of the first 100 and will keep it very long term. If I can buy my old car back even better but the new owner will not sell as he loves it so much!

These cars are a bargain. Buy one, pay the warranty, expect & accept to have it off the road a month or two a year being worked on (worst case scenario) and enjoy it!

Just looking for a 12 c spider in Germany and happy to find this discussion. Prices are down here as well, about 125.000 € . Not quiete as much, as in the UK, but still a bargain.I even thought to get one RHD in the UK, but with all this Brexit mess, it seem to be too much of a risk to me. I love british sport cars and had a TVR Cerbera 4.5 for years (RHD!) . So i am familiar with minor issues and can live with them.

But it looks like any problem at the 12 c makes your money melt down like an icecube in the heat of Arizona. So this ridiculous expensive warranty obviously is a must have, at least as a peace of mind. Although the 650 prices dropped down as well, (they are just 10 K more than a 12 c), i like the 12c more because its clean front and straight rear design. If there will ever be a McLaren a collectors item, ( not to mention the f1 ), it should be the 12 c .

So the plan is to get one and keep it long term. But if you buy one now, it is already 5-6 years old. So as the warranty is limited to max 12 years, who ever will buy it then, when you dont get a warranty any more? I am afraid, that this car will be unsaleable after it reaches the end of a possible warranty. We dont have any indies around here in Germany, and i am afraid we wont have them in the future.
As an alternative i think about an AMG GT roadster, which is honestly not a real alternative, but defintiley has no resale or warranty problem. So i really appreciate your thoughts and advice to wipe out my concerns.
