Thank you all for your replies .. its good to hear directly from enthusiasts and owners rather than just relying on internet forum talk .
You McLaren people seem a really friendly bunch , which is always an attraction .
My favourite club used to be the Triumph Spitfire Club --- everyone was just interested in the cars , and helping each other to sort out the endless niggles and breakdowns that was par for the course .

PompeyReece -- of course you are entirely correct

Isaldiri - I just love cars , pretty much any one of them intrigues me in some way , and I just adore supercars . Doesn't mean that supercars are without faults , and sadly doesn't mean that I can easily afford to trade up from a Boxster to a McLaren either smile

Broached the subject with the wife this morning , and she said I could trade whatever I wanted ( probably including myself ) , but that I was not to go anyway near HER Boxster . !!

Oh well , I had a fun few hours dreaming about this , and I suspect that I will revisit this issue sometime in the future .

Thank you again everyone .

Some help with hard facts would be greatly appreciated .

The other Qs have been answered better by others than I can. A few points on Q3, 5, 6

3/ Mine has been completely faultless, but I'm aware some cars have had issues. Buy on condition, and have it properly inspected.

They are mechanically tough, and many get used regularly and driven "properly". No one I know buys a McLaren for the badge. They get bought for their driving dynamics / performance.

5/ All Macs are supercars, and 99.9% of the public won't tell a 540 from a 570, and there is little difference on the road. You might however desire a 570 after buying a 540 nevertheless.

6/ Test drive one!

I'm thinking about upgrading my wife's Evoque to a Veyron without asking her & am worried I can't afford it. Can anyone tell me definitively every cost fixed and variable that I will encounter and give me a general steer on whether I can trade a second hand car in when I buy it please. Also if my wife prefers her Evoque I can't go ahead with the Veyron but I haven't asked her yet. Also, hypercars and their owners suck. When do schools go back again just out of interest?

I'm thinking about upgrading my sports car. Can anyone point me in the direction of a forum where a genuine request for information isn't met with condescending, sarcastic replies from faceless nomarks who could have spent their time providing some constructive information instead ... rolleyes

It is frustrating though. A lot of us have taken quite a bit of time out our days, to respond with some lengthy genuine real world experiences, costs etc. Then the OP comes back and says his wife won't let him anyways. Why not ask her first if he needs permission?

Waste of everyone's time.

The specific outcome here doesn't matter. A sensible question was raised, to which there were informative responses. If the OP can't make use of the answers, someone in the future will when they come across the thread. No trees were felled, no animals were injured and some of us engaged our brains playing through the scenarios. Why does another thread get reduced to infantile squabbling?

This really. Was it a genuine request for information? Or a genuine waste of people's time.
I don't really follow the argument that it could be useful for a future person with a nicer wife who is looking to upgrade from a Boxster to a Maclarren and wants to know if they can afford it. In the same vein you could argue that those people who pretend to have cancer to get a load of sympathy online are providing a valuable service to genuine cancer sufferers.
Also. I do have a face.

Who owns the boxster the op or the op's wife? I am confused.
Pretty sure if I said to my Mrs that I was chopping her AMG in for something I wanted the response would be "fk off" even though I bought it for her

I agree with Larry 5.2.

As soon as the thread begins, it has a life of its own. I LOVE reading about owners' experience in real life regardless of whether I will own one or not.

It was a great thread for anyone else thinking of taking the plunge.

The OP seemed to give up on the idea quite quickly so perhaps he was bored and dreaming either way thread content still useful.

Firstly , thank you to all of you who have written constructive answers to my questions .

I was not going to reply to Jakesmiths response because initially , I felt that I had nothing constructive to respond with .

But as one of you has pointed out , some of you took to time and trouble to answer to my genuine questions , and those people deserve some sort of response .

This is. a car forum , and does not deal with life and death matters ... we are here for the fun of interacting with people who share the same interest .

Some of us have limited means , and so have to research any potential purchase very carefully .
Some of us keep the cars that we buy for decades , and so research things carefully beforehand. , to ensure that we buy the correct car — one that suits our purposes , budget , access to servicing agents etc.
Better to find out before purchase , rather than to lament at leisure .

I have found that discussing a particular marque , model or model sub variant with owners is a great way of finding out hard facts about a potential purchase .

On those occasions when I have not been able to get adequate information in print , in person , or from the internet , I have taken the time and trouble to write the definitive books on that marque or that model ( Available on Amazon : 9781845849221. 9781787114333. Both world first standalones )

Knowledge is never wasted .

In this particular case , I was genuinely interested in a 540 or a 570 .

Cost and garaging space were , and remain , very real issues .
No shame admitting to either of these points .

My wife owns an equal share of each car , and so has a say .

Bottom line is that I learnt from the constructive comments that were made , and I am now moe knowledgeable than I was previously .
Surely this is what matters in a forum .

Whether I ever buy a 540 or a 570 is surely pretty immaterial compared to the fact that I and others ave learnt something from this exercise .

Term is restarting shortly , so I better now go and sharpen the pencils in preparation for the incoming homework. smile

People of limited means doing their research in detail to make sure they don’t overextend themselves buying a Mclarren?
Ok sure sorry for doubting you, it was obviously a genuine enquiry.

Interesting post, good to read comments from owners.
Sorry it's not worked out for you this time OP.
I'm sure that one day a McLaren will be yours.

Absolutely a pleasure - I remember was the first to reply? - to help a fellow petrolhead. Had similar doubts and questions years ago also coming from a Cayman.

Don't be let down by stupid people wasting their little brain in writing funny entertaining replies, you have full entitlement to ask question in a forum of petroleahds.

Any more questions please shout.
