Still, how did you get a chip?

Nothing to do with warranty.

I suspect two separate things are being connected here.

Although stone chips obviously can cause cracks in windscreens, the OP mentioned a stone chip - and then later, a stress crack appeared. Stress cracks in 720 windscreens (from the edge) are not that uncommon, and are usually replaced under warranty.

I assume that the crack the OP mentioned was one of these, and the crack was not from the stone chip. It was just a happy coincidence on timing that the stress crack appeared after the stone chip and hence resulted in a new windscreen that solved both.

Exactly this, I thought that was clear in my original rundown but I suppose it always is when you write it! smile

The stress crack was unrelated to the stone chip, was in a different part of the windscreen.

Surprised the manufacturer stumped up for that.
No that’s not what I said. I said it had a chip, but then a stress crack appeared, that’s why they replaced the windscreen under warranty
Eminating from the chip? Or unrelated?

It still seems remarkably generous.

Edit. Just read a bit further.

It certainly was not clear. A nice coincidence for you then.

Thanks for sharing the update on 720 ownership, didn't take long for 2 plonkers to attempt to derail the positive experience.
Ignore the haters and keep posting.

Very enjoyable read. Thanks for taking the time to entertain and enlighten us on your beautiful car. I've had a 570S Spider for nearly two years and understand how compelling these cars have become. I'm currently looking for the right 720S Spider. Happy motoring.

Thanks for taking the time to share your ownership experience of the 720s. Your great write up all elements both positive and negative was a contributing factor in my decision to take the plunge.

I really enjoyed reading this. You really encapsulated that head vs heart battle of buying an expensive car. Hope I'm in a similar position one day.

Enjoy the carbiggrin

Ok, 15months into my ownership and 8,000 miles - and for the first time I'm feeling a little less confident about the long term ownership potential of a Mclaren. I openly admit to being a little fickle though.

Anyway, so the car went for its service a few months back, as per the above had the windscreen replaced due to a stress crack. Within a month of it coming back, I noticed a crack had appeared in the gorilla/roof glass. Ok, no big deal, I had hoped I had avoided this pitfall but obviously not. Still within the manufacturer's warranty so I knew it wasn't going to be a problem claiming. I'd sorned the car and although I could stick tax on it again for another month, I didn't really want to plough another 300 mile round trip taking it to McManchester. So McManchester put a call into Mclaren customer care who agreed to come and pick it up and take it to a dealer of my choice (impressed with that!)

So as they're loading the car up, I noticed the corner of one of my front wings had bubbling! The corrosion issue had got to me too. So in the space of a couple of months, my windscreen and roof glass had suffered stress cracks and front wings had corroded - my 720s was becoming a bloody cliche!
Anyway, checked the other side, same thing (not quite as bad though) Again, this will get sorted under warranty, McManchester said they're re-do the PPF and the ceramic coating too.

Now I know overall it's not a big deal, it's not costing me anything apart from being without the car (and the garage space is handy right now) and the issues are not the sort that leaves you stranded by the side of the road, so could be so much worse. And let's face it, Mclaren has been great at sorting the issues, so no complaints there. But what concerns me is are these are issues that could re-occur and do so when I don't have warranty coverage? How confident am I that replacing the glass will be the end of the problem, or is the root cause still there and this will just re-occur? Same with painting the front wings? And at the end of the 3yr warranty, which expired today, I don't believe these issues would be covered? (I'm now on an extended warranty until December 2022. Glass is covered by insurance I suppose.

So I don't know, maybe see how things go next year. I had pretty much decided I'd trade up to a 720s Spider this time next year, but now my honeymoon bubble has been burst somewhat and my perception of long term Mclaren ownership put into question, I'm starting to consider whether scratching an itch with a different brand may be a better route to take?

My 2017 570s is having some corrosion issues sorted in the new year through the warranty, no issues at all with age. I may be wrong but understand the problem is something to do with original paints used and new work will not suffer the same.

I am sure the glass issue is frustrating but if i didnt spend much time off the road with repair im not sure it would bother me, especially given your high praise on the thread below.

I've been following this thread since it started. I was very very close to buying a McLaren, and after a lot of reading and hearing reports about corrosion, electrical issues, and dealership woes, I chose not to buy one.

I love your car and its colour etc, but I am so glad I backed off, just at the right time. It was so tempting.

I very much appreciate your thread as its given me a very open and honest insight into your own ownership experience, to date.

Keep posting please, as I'd love to hear more about your car in the future.

Thankyou.

I honestly think you’re missing out on one of the best if not the best driving experiences you can have. And with the enslaught of EV's this era is quickly coming to an end. And we're at the pinnacle now. I do not regret buying my McLaren, I’m so glad I did and I have no way made a decision to move on. Since I’ve had my car I’ve joined various supercar clubs and got to know many owners of all the brands. Trust me when I say it, the McLaren owners do not have a worse experience than say Ferrari or Porsche owners, McLaren’s aren’t so much more unreliable, it’s just whenever a McLaren has an issue the story spreads like wildfire, people jumping on the bandwagon. Tell you one thing as well, all the common McLaren issues are annoyances, common problems in other brands include those that leave you stranded by the side of the road. We’ve actually got a pretty good deal with McLaren’s.

To add to the above - I have not owned a McLaren but from what I read on this forum (once you tune out the extreme views both ways), it seems like it is possibly a better ownership proposition than other cars. I certainly paid a lot of money in addition to my warranty for repairs that were not covered - some of those issues arguably design faults (e.g manifolds or exhaust back boxes that need replacing due to cracks every couple of years).

I had the same issue with my 570. It was reported that the issue would not occur with the newer models due to McLaren changing their processes (the bubbling is not rust, it is caused by moisture coming out of the metal or something similar). Seems this is not the case as 720s are affected too.

Still this is the perfect time of year to get any work done as you won't be using the car. It will feel incredible the first time you drive it again too.

I may be missing out on the McLaren driving 'experience', but I don't want the extras that go with it.

I want a very reliable car that I can use all year round, and also use it for foreign travel / touring. To that end, I moved my sights to other brands and I found precisely what I was looking for.

This.....

Its fully loaded with all sorts of technology, goes like stink, very comfortable, and sounds fantastic. Even my wife loves it !!

Totally different car, ones a super GT and ones and out and out supercar. I can see why a McLaren may not appeal if you’re after the Super GT experience. Lovely cars 👍🏼
