Sports Exhaust - can someone enlighten me?

Hi all
I realise I may be going against the flow a bit here - but I am wondering about replacing my sports exhaust (that came with my 650s) for a standard one.
Does anyone know what the differences are? Are any ECU changes needed? Any noticeable difference in performance, or is it really just about noise? Any weight penalty?
I would like the car to be a bit quieter... especially when driving around town, but also when cruising on motorway. Would replacing the sports exhaust make much difference?
