Well, the point of the proactive suspension is that it not only works like anti-roll bars without their added weight, but also deals with skew (when the front and rear of the car are being rotated by bumps in opposite directions) which no other performance suspension deals as well with - including the sports suspension. It’s not just about relative damper settings.

For me, it means the car holds the line at the limit on a rough road or track, and is much smoother while cruising. And you can feel what is going on at each corner, as opposed to the twitchiness without feel from the Europeans.

Fascinating to watch - although I've now discovered that my super-trick very expensive suspension is basically just moving a needle valve when I change settings. frown

I always picture it being very like the old 1960s Mini hydrolastic system!

I had exactly the same dilemma last year, put a deposit on a 570s, Covid hit, was worried about losing a ton of money so pulled out of the deal. Then when I realised the market wasn't going to crash, I started looking again but this time time started considering the 650s.

Assuming a 3yr ownership and therefore at least 2yrs of buying a warranty, overall cost of ownership will likely be very similar. One will "cost" more in depreciation and one on warranty cost. So take cost out of the equation.

So then it comes down to just comparing what each car offers you. Which do you think will be more special? Part of supercar ownership is feeling like a rockstar when you're driving it, which one is going to give you more of that feeling?

IMO, the 650s has more presence, but the 570s looks more modern, so what floats your boat?

For me, I decided to go for a 650s, found one I liked at Baytree, it only had about 4 months Mclaren warranty left. So I factored in about £400 per month on a warranty extension. Then man maths kicked in and I worked out instead of throwing £400 a month into a warranty I could spend that on finance, buy a more expensive car, but newer so it comes with a decent amount of McWarranty left. I ended up with a <2yr old, 3,500 miles 720s with 27months warranty ......... and it's actually costing me less per month than the 650s would have done smile

You’re not wrong. In this case it’s engineered to supplement the already excellent conventional parts - arms and springs - to provide leveling and to keep all four corners in contact.

I think looks are one of the biggest differentiating factors. I think the 570 looks just a bit more modern.

I’ve had both and now have a 720s.

Performance difference is negligible for road use, I doubt you would notice the so called carpet ride on a 650s over a 570 as they are both superb, but on track the active aero of the 650 is superior.

I would get the best spec, colour and best priced car regardless of which model, but just my opinion!!

Just at the end of the very same debate with myself !! I love all of the McLarens, but I really want a Spider and the best one that I could stretch to would be a 650s. The air brake and the ability to drop the tonneau window clinched it. I also think in terms of depreciation, it’s a good time to get any 650s. I just need to get the right offer for my current car - Alfa 4c Spider - carbon tub!!! and find the right 650s to buy.
Can’t bloody wait!!!

I have a 650s spider in volcano yellow. I agree with all points made above. I considered 570s and 458s but preferred 650 for all same reasons as already stated and following same thought processes / months of research.

The last two points are also key. You may have to wait quite a while for the spec you want, then be decisive. The good ones in the right colours n specs with warranties at the "right" (realistic) prices can go quickly. Others hang around.

I'm loving mine. Until warranty renewal time...

A long time no posts on ph but being in the market for a 570s i came back to do some research and read some opinions.

Colours has been a debating issue for me, i know its personal but what do you guys consider good or bad (i.e resale) colours?

Mine is black and think it looks great on either the 650s or 570s but maybe a little predictable for some...Volcano Red is a stunning colour in the flesh as is Mantis green.

When ever I ask myself the same question, I look at the bottom end of the market for that particular model.

For Macs I see a lot of grey/brown and white. Bright colours are often appealing and don’t see many red cars which I think really suits the 570s.

Mine too - goes very nicely with the red calipers and the "Batman" reg. My other choice would indeed be volcano red.

Maybe its just the lockdown, but doesnt seem many, inc bright colours are shifting at the moment, you are right though, the are quite a few greys/dark colours for sale.

I do quite like white, but my last car was white so dont want the same.

Preferred colours for me personally:

Venturi Orange
Papaya Spark
Volcano Yellow

There’s a good choice of “Volcano” colours, and a good few orange variants too.

I don’t really like Orange, but would have loved a Volcano Yellow.

In the end I bought a Storm Grey one, which Ivam very happy with.

Any green for resale has to be tough ...
Not keen on blade silver. Having said that all Macs look great in any colour !!

Take a look at Muriwai White. Its an MSO option which is amazing in the flesh. Overcast conditions its a very subtle shade of blue. In bright sunshine it sparkles and shimmers white. Very rare colour on any McLaren.

I'm sure I've missed this comment numerous times but what's the clearance like on single track roads? My last 5 miles home are on single lane, banked roads with the occasional grass growing out the middle! I never grounded my last 911 for comparison. I'd be looking at semi daily use so any likely frequent impacts (and thus frequent stress) probably kills this as a choice. Thanks.

I can't comment on a 570S specifically as I only have a 540C but my drive entrance/road/overider interface is pretty bad regarding camber and angles but the car can be got on and off without the lift but I usually use it. Not sure I'd want to be driving 5 miles at sub 30 mph to stop the lift dropping but then the general clearance isn't too bad as long as the road is not too potholed etc.
