Sports Series weekly market update since Sat 19th:

14 cars sold and 20 new listings on AT, so still more cars coming to market than taken off although 3:2 rather than 3:1 last week. As above, two of the 'new' listings are private sales that were previously listed (presumably SOR) at dealers; one sold car was previously 'sold' so presumably re-listed.

Of the six 570S coupes sold, four are in the £90-93k bracket. One of the two £100k+ cars is the Vega Blue 2019 mode that Streetbeat picked out last week, so obviously he's in tune with the market. I can't explain why the 14k mile 2017 model at Brookspeed was worth £105k to someone, unless they really like the factory aero parts it had.

Two Spiders sold at £105k, almost the cheapest available, plus a 2020 car at £115k (Dick Lovett). 600LTs again two towards the lower end of the price range.

Two 570GTs sold, both later ceramic-braked cars listed over £100k. And apparently someone paid £100k for a white 2019 540C.

Price reductions across the board; biggest drop is £10k off the blue Spider at George Kingsley, but was well overpriced at £135k previously. I do think the 570 Spider market has slid down a touch, unsurprisingly.

My car of the week is an example of this, a nicely specced 2017 Spider reduced to £105k on 20k miles (click for ad):

Another interesting car: a 540C on 55,000 miles - seems v poor value to me, like most 540Cs, but proof these cars can take miles.

Overall I'd say sellers seem to outnumber buyers, so if you want to sell then your car needs to represent good value relative to the rest of the market, and the trend seems likely gradually downwards as we head into the Christmas period.

Not sure if I'll keep doing this, it can be time consuming trying to unwind re-listed cars etc and seems like mostly a re-statement of the obvious, good value cars sell, poor value ones don't smile
appreciate the updates, im sure others also. keep doing

Great detail as ever.

My prospective is just from being in the market last year and what would have caught my eye.

The Brookspeed car is immaculate, massive spec and mso paint, track pack, the aero is a personal thing, all oem mclaren though so worth good money if you want to sell.

As a comparison, the Grange coupe at the same price, pretty much the same mileage but a year newer looks dull and very droll, I know which I'd rather have despite it being a year newer.

I think you're doing your own head in mate, you've just got to decide on your budget and get the best car that suits you. There is no "correct" price for a 570s or deciphering what the market is and isn't doing, as you've perfectly shown.

I know its a big purchase, but buy on condition and spec, not necessarily mileage and year and if you buy the right car it will always hold the value better and be more desirable than low spec cars in base colours.

@samoht thanks for the insights and featuring the car. Its certainly very well specced as you highlighted which is nice to see it being appreciated. Thanks.

She’s a stunner

Thanks for posting, I'm only looking at ads online so it's great to hear from people who actually know the cars. And thanks for posting such a nice pic of your car in daylight, it looks like a McLaren brochure shoot. Good luck with the sale, as they say.

To be clear, I'm not paralysed with indecision, I'm stuck waiting for some Germans to make a garage door and ship it over here, and then for it to be fitted. So I'm 'enjoying' the pre-purchase phase (since I don't have much choice in the matter).

I agree about finding the right car and not being hung up on age/mileage. Honestly I was about to go for the VY car before I discovered how long my garage is going to take, so I think once that's sorted, when I see the right car for me I probably won't have too much trouble going for it. I'd like to have a sense of where the market is so I can judge value, but ultimately that'll be secondary to the emotional decision.

I know the yellow car at Steel City - looks absolutely fantastic in the pictures but like so many McLaren cars it looks even better in the flesh. Sicilian Yellow instead of Volcano might make you think it doesn't pop but it does.
Sicilian is a very much underated and scarce colour, has to be seen in good light to be truely appreciated though.

I was firmly in the camp of thinking all McLaren owners genuinely had something wrong with them but they are great. Suck up the warranty cost and enjoy.

That's my friends car. Didn't sell through dealer and is now being offering privately. He doesn't live in the UK now hence the sale.....

Thanks for the info. Like the colour and it has the forged wheels too, seems a decent price for a one-owner car.

Market Update since 26th Nov
(as of yesterday evening)

An even balance of cars newly listed and cars sold this week, at 11 and 12 respectively. The seven 540C/570S/570GT coupes sold are all in the £80-90k band again, this seems to be where the market is for these 2016-17 cars unless there's something special about them. Out of the 17 570S Coupes I've seen go from the market since I started watching, all but three had an asking price less than £95k; of those three exceptions, two were 2019 cars in nice colours, and one was the Brookspeed car with lots of MSO exterior bits.

To my surprise the 55,000 mile black 540C apparently is one of the cars sold, at £80k. Four Spiders sold, again in a tight price band £113-115k; two from McLaren dealers.

Quite a few cars having £2k or £3k taken off their asking prices; what's perhaps notable is that two 600LTs have had £9k and £10k knocked off, following what looks like a bit of a slide in this market. These join four other cars now offered at £140k, with most of the rest in the £140-150k bracket.

My car of the week is one of these reduced-to-£140k 600LTs, a blue 2020 car still under original warranty til March next year and seemingly high spec with lots of carbon options inside and out. 10k miles seems about right for one of these at just under three years old.

Overall, the market is still moving, cars are selling, they just need to be at a good price to do so, and that price level has probably come down gradually over the past weeks and months.

Disclaimers: 'Sold' just means cars that were on AT and are no longer, some of these may not actually have sold. I'm trying to track listings consistently but errors can creep in especially where sellers create a new ad for the same car. I have no special inside market information, only what can be gleaned by checking AT daily.

As ever, corrections and further information welcome, especially if you know specific cars.

Appreciate the time and effort once again!

The Vega Blue one was advertised in April for £158k, then June for £160k. It also seems to have gone from 8220 to 9920 miles between the advert changes, wondering if it was sold in April/May then back up again in June.

A relative of mine knows the previous owner (prior to April) and he only kept it for 5 months as it spent more time in the dealer than on his drive.

It is a lovely colour and spec though.

Thanks that’s very interesting. Are your sold prices the last advertised price before they disappeared from AT? In which case the actual sold price may well be lower? I guess the auction sites (CC, The Market etc) may give some more clarity on actual transaction prices .

Also why do you think the 540c doesn’t attract more of a discount to the 570s, that always surprises me?

Shame the last owner of the blue 600LT had such trouble. I do wonder to what extent some cars are just 'troublesome' and others are fine, if that was the case then by checking the service history you could potentially identify a 'good' example and anticipate that it would continue to cause few problems.

Yeah, I'm literally just taking the advertised price on the last day the ad was up. An owner has posted on this thread that his private sale car advertised for £78k went for low-70s-ish, so you're absolutely right that the actual transaction price can be lower. One would assume that the longer a car's been advertised at a given price, the more flexibility there will be on that. Some cars eg the blue 2019 one at McLaren Glasgow came and went within a week, so those presumably sold at or very near the £110k asking price.

Auctions have the benefit of revealing the actual transaction price, however I slightly think they may be used to move on cars that are in some way imperfect, also the auction format is relatively less appealing to most buyers so the willingness to pay may be lower. So the actual transaction prices in private/dealer sales may still be higher than auction prices.

I agree the 540C asking prices seem on a par with the 570S, however I have a sense they are slower to sell. My personal theory is that the main thing propping up 540Cs vs 570Ss is the same as props up the Sports Series overall against the 650S, which is that potential buyers are sh!t-scared of McLaren ownership. They want the incredible speed and handling, they're attracted by the low entry price compared to a Ferrari or Lambo, but they're very worried about ruinous ownership costs. Therefore, they're keen to look for the simplest, cheapest-to-maintain McLaren they can find, and hence the 540Cs perhaps don't have to be that much cheaper to find buyers. Although given how few seem to be selling, perhaps the 540C is due for an adjustment and a larger gap.

I was after a car sub £100k and the McLaren was head and shoulders above the opposition, all that came close was the Audi R8 and it wasn’t special enough, that’s in my opinion of course, the Ferrari’s on offer were either much older cars or the California, lambo offerings were just older Gallardo’s.
I plumped for a 650, bought it without a McLaren warranty and probably too many owners, when I’m pissed off with work/life I take it out for an hour or two and thank my lucky stars I own it.

Always good to hear from happy owners.

To be clear, when I say potential buyers are scared of McLaren running costs, that is a statement entirely describing the perception of McLaren running costs by non-owners, I'm not making any statement about actual costs. The important thing is that the market is driven by perception not reality, as that's what'll drive most buyers' decision-making.

Highest running costs for me so far has been the GT3 RS. £1500 for a basic service on a beetle? No ta! Equivalent service on a 458 £1000 on a 600 £800

I think the 600 is lighter on consumables as well certainly lighter than the GT3. A lot of it is perception. McLaren would do well to stop using Car care plan for their warranties and bring them fully in house. Given that the warranty is £3000 you would expect £1500 of this to be the third party warranty companies profit and the VAT. Imagine having a 600LT on £2000 a year warranty or less? Total game changer. Ultimately the ownership costs aren't really much over the competition.

They do seem to get problem cars I think if like me you are lucky to have one of the good ones you keep hold of it! The longer I own my 600 the more I'm growing to appreciate it they really are superb cars. If you suck up the warranty just drive the wheels off the thing and enjoy it. I was out in mine yesterday. People forget that these things are supercars and with supercars you should expect them to come with associated running costs. I really don't think they cost any more to run that a Ferrari or Lambo. Porsche are cheaper but Porsche are merely sports cars not supercars so you can expect these lesser cars to be cheaper to run.

Not sure how relevant my thoughts are but I was looking to make a purchase at the start of the year and to be up front and honest I was already thinking more GT car than Sports Car or Super car.
Anyhow I did a brief dalliance with rhe 720 series and ruled them out as too expensive. At the time realistically it was going to cost about £165k for a 720. I ended up paying about £130k on an Aston but I have noticed some 720s are now changing hands in the £130s and lots in the £140s which just wasn't an option for me at the time as they were a good £30k more expensive last winter.
My point is that is quite a hit in less than 1 year but more importantly to me at least is I find it difficult to predict the Mclaren market.
I don't think the factory help themselves with many versions of ultimately the same the car.
Why have 720s dipped this year? Is it newer models out shining it? Would the 720 not always outshine the 570?
I do find it hard with Mclaren and Im Sure others do too ( hence this thread) and until more confidence in the brands financial are achieved I fear this uncertainty will always hold them back and that would be a shame.
I could prob get back most if not all my money back on the car I bought though I would be in a £30k hole had I gone the 720 route and that is scarey to a lot of people.
I do think the 570 prob has a wider appeal.though as t its just cheaper so more potential.buyers but where its going price wise I have no idea

720’s are just coming back down from their inflated price post covid

Pre covid they were coming down to the £130k level, and that’s where they are now

Amazing they are cheaper than a 600 but that's the car that really gives McLaren it's rep.

Would you take a 720 over your 600 at these prices?
