Just curious to see if my 2012 MP4-12C (chassis 412) is the earliest one still under the Official McLaren Warranty?

I have owned the car for 6 years now (had only 759 miles on the clock) and I have renewed the McWarranty every year (I got 24 months in 08/2022 just before the car was 10 years old).

Now that McLaren have extended the McWarranty age limit (now upto 15 year old cars can be covered), I will once again be renewing in 08/2024 for another year as the complete piece of mind is worth it (to me).

My car is still under 14k miles and underwent an £8k respray (McLeeds) and PPF to the front and lower half of the car in 08/2023 so she is MINT and has only done 150 miles since, due to me undergoing knee surgery late 2023 and not being able to drive it!

Is this the oldest (and cleanest?) early 12C still in the official network?

It was £9,670 for the 24 month cover in 07/2022 and I think that this year renewal (in early August) will be just over £5k BUT it gives complete piece of mind!

Unless it's gone up very recently, it should be just below £5k. McLaren removed roadside assistance last year, and dropped the price when they did so - I think the super series (5+ years old) is something like £4,750

Was the respray covered by the warranty?

There are surprisingly two 12Cs on sale as approved used at Mc dealers, so presumably when someone buys those they will be under warranty. I guess they must also be pretty good condition to be sold as approved.

the cumulative warranty spend must be well into £20k+ figures

no way a 12C is requiring £20k+ repairs, unless you have a dog !

Yep.

By charging nearly £10k for 2 years warranty, McLaren are saying that they do NOT think it will cost more than that to maintain the car for 24 months.........yet people keep paying it.

Many of you will know this but for those that don’t and are considering a 12C. Thorney Motorsport offer a warranty for a bit under £3k per year.

I have run mine for over 2 years now without warranty. I have had some issues. Accumulators (I think these would be covered by the Thorney Warranty) at <£2k, an aircon condenser at about £500 and a soft close door latch (best replaced in pairs) at £1k. So I’m about £1500 better off for taking the risk. Many other MOC members have done better than I.

Paint corrosion is a different matter and I don’t think any warranty would cover the older cars (>5 years). This is getting cheaper to repair (a viable alternative to panel replacement).

Buying again, I would say go for a Thorney (or Mc) warranty just for the piece of mind it provides. Worth making this a condition of purchase, even if you have to agree to pay a bit extra for the car. I’d be cautious about your bog standard aftermarket warranty offered by your average prestige dealership, or that you could buy yourself.

Just serviced at V Eng

The respray was not covered under warranty and I chose to have it done as a small amount of corrosion had appeared on one of the front arches and the underside of the bonnet front lip, plus numerous road trips had left their fair share of stone chips on the car.

I am a perfectionist, so doing the job properly was the only way for me (as it is for all of my cars), hence the expense / re-investment in the car.

The 12C is another keeper (I have 11 cars currently and I have owned 6 of them for over 8 years!) and I cant see why people think that £5k p.a for complete piece of mind is expensive when others spend double that each year on smoking (and that kills you!).

As for the car being a dog - my ownership experience has been pretty flawless and the car is the BEST car that I have ever owned and that is when compared to over 100+ cars that I have had on the last 35 years!

I would take my MINT 12C over a rough 720S all day long!
