I think I have completely confused myself!

I've got a leaf coming sometime in the next month or so but obviously need to get a home charge point installed. I have decided to use nupower to install a 32amp rolec one (I think they do a free upgrade). But now I'm getting confused about type 1 or 2. I can see that getting an untethered one makes sense to future proof, do I want the type 1 or 2? And will the cable that come with the car fit? I don't really want to be buying any cables etc...

The leaf has a type 1 connector on it. The type 2 connector is a more modern connector and used by newer stuff. Either get a tethered type 1 connector or a type 2 port and buy a type 2 to type 1 cable. The second option will cost you £150 for a cable if you don't already have one (and the car won't come with one unless you specified to the 6.6kw option).

Thanks for the reply! The thing that worries me about a tethered type is what I would do when I replace the leaf, presumably the newer car will have a type 2 connector?

If you have the 3.3kw Leaf, I would suggest getting a 32amp charger, with the tethered type 1 lead.

It is a neater solution, doesn't cost extra in initially, and doesn't require an extra cable to be purchased.

If you go choose this route, and you decide to upgrade at some point in the future, an electrician can replace your tethered cable with a different tethered cable.

The cost of changing a tethered cable will be about £150 (roughly).

And you can then choose the exact lead and connector that you need at that point in time.

I went with a Rolec 32Amp with a type 2 socket, hopefully so that im future proofed.

Currently i have a Leaf with 6.6kW charger, so i already have the charger to Leaf cable.

I expect we'll upgrade to the next Leaf (if the range is extended) and if the Qashqai PHEV ever arrives i might get one of those too.

I understand that point of view but I think the cost of changing the tethered lead will not be any more than a cable so Id rather have the convenience of not having to get a cable out of the boot when I want to charge at home.

This is exactly right. Changing a tethered cable at some point in the future will be circa £150 including the cost of the cable and labour.
