Could you describe your use a bit more - both typical speed for 55 mpg motorway and how much short use to get 100 mpg (presumably quite a high proportion is only within the battery only range)

I live in South Yorks so the M1 near me is infested with cameras and *smart* motorway sections, as a result, I tend to stick to the speed limit.

Whenever possible I'll drive the whole journey locked into eDrive, when impractical, use hybrid mode generally, and only use eDrive for queuing and low speed stop/start type stuff.

I do a lot of local journeys, hence my use is skewed towards EV use.

Thanks. Sounds like you are enjoying it.

has the interior quality stood up to a few 1000 miles driving or have the squeaks arrived.
Mines 14 months old and still no squeaks or rattles. And in 'leccy mode you can really hear a pin drop so even the tiniest squeak or tizz would be audible.

I get low 50's mpg overall. Half my journeys are pure electric.

I have a "V8V" in my car history and the two are chalk and cheese. The BMW feels really nimble, loads of low-down grunt (overtakes start at 2k rpm), feels more airy inside and, dare I say it, more premium! Add-in 4 seat practicality, effortless limo-style cruising, and the super rarity factor makes it a real bargain IMHO. And I paid full RRP for mine.

I agree with all the above.

I commented to the sales guy about the eerie quiet in EV mode, and he replied that it caused problems in development in-that noises that would be otherwise inaudible in an IC car are now an issue, and had to be engineered out.

The nimbleness you refer to (particularly in Sport) belie the cars mass, and whilst not huge by any margin, the low slung battery and motors and carbon roof contribute to an agility that inspires confidence.

The ludicrously low Cd also deserves mention, as it's this as much as anything that makes it so very quiet at motorway speeds (when the engine is running).

I've got an i8 on loan for 4 days at the end of the month. This thread has been interesting and given me some food for thought. Thanks for the posts.

My 2014 i8 is also quiet still, not rattles or squeaks.

EXCEPT the air con/fan is noticeable when in electric mode. It isn't loud, but there is a distinct buzz. Is this normal?

Not in my experience, I can't hear the fan even when stationary.
If the fans blowing hard enough, I can hear the air, but not the fan.

Same here. Two years in, cost nothing to run, feels special, very quick on the road thanks to the torque, paid full whack. Wouldn't change a thing.

Great car.

Well, nearly a year down the line from starting this thread and I've just picked up my i8. Bought a 2015 example with very low miles and impressed so far. Looks stunning, great road manners and pretty dynamic to drive. I hope I stay in love....

I've always thought that exterior colour would suit a red interior

The 'white' interior really makes the cabin feel special imo.

I can't see why they'd be any different from the battery in say a Prius and pretty much never need replacing. (well let's say 10/15 years min). I'm sure it's state of charge etc will constantly be monitored and the ICE turned on as and when required to keep it in good shape for as long as possible.

And it's only a small battery anyhow - 7.1kwh so IF it did need replacing I couldn't see it being anything like 30k! (Leaf/i3 battery of circa 20kwh are about 5k IIRC). Or you'd likely be able to get it refurbed once EV's are more common and specialists are about to perform such work.

Edit: NB if it's to be used as an occasional car it'd probably help with battery life if you can plug it in, and not just rely on self charging.

I’ve owned a bmw i8 for the last couple of years, and have also had this concern. I’ve put this to bmw who continually seem to ‘swerve’ the question.
However, having spoken recently to the i mechanics for bmw I have since been informed that a replacement battery pack, as of now would cost 8k, plus fitting.

Will I hold onto to my bmw i8 with 6 years battery warrantee remaining?
Absolutely not ,I’m getting shot of it now and going back to a bmw m4 ! The residuals of These electric/ hybrid cars in the future is very uncertain terrortory, especially with the i8 spider being released next year with more power and double the electric range !
