I'm thinking of a ev for everyday car but am worried about running out of battery.

Say I'm planning a journey which is within range but traffic jams or long diversions mean end destination is not out of range and I conk out on the motorway.

Will road side assistance come out and recover to destination with out extra cost?

You can usually get a tow to a rapid charger or home, depending on what kind of cover you have. Unless you are really pushing the limits of range any diversion or traffic should make no difference, traffic actually improves range as the slower you go the more efficent the motor.

Its also why I personally never plan a trip that requires 100% range of any EV, I always plan to arrive with roughly 5-10% in reseve.

In 20K of EV driving the lowest charge state I have arrived home with was 5%, and that was me deliberately pushing the range to see how I could go. Most day to day driving I never see the range drop below 30%.

Tesla give one free recovery. No idea about the others.

Also worth remembering that the cars, well certainly Tesla, starts going into aggressive power saving as it gets close to zero to save power and give you a bit more range.

Surely one would take the same precaution when planning the journey with an EV as one would with an ICE?

I've just bought a second hand Nissan Leaf on PCP and I get 3 years RAC included, which covers battery run-out incidents. So I'd just have to call them.

Yes, battery rental on my Leaf covers being picked up if you have a flat battery.

They'd want it to have happened for a reason though, such as a broken charger en-route or a lengthy diversion

In other words, you can't just take on a 150 mile trip across country and expect to travel the last 60 miles on a low loader.

This article here:

https://www.rac.co.uk/press-centre#/pressreleases/...

shows that RAC fitted some patrol vehicles with a portable fast charger that could top up a EV with something like 15miles. this reads as a pilot scheme and I cannot seem to see whether it worked and if they rolled it permanently
