So, my motoring life has changed. Very rarely do I need a long-range car nowadays, and I'm thinking of an EV. The Renault Zoe seems to meet my every expectation, but one. I live in Surrey and my mother lives in Scotland. Will I have the range to do that trip? Realistically 290 miles?

Is the train or hire car not an option for that specific journey?

I wouldn't try that in an ev.

I had a Renault Clio once, 25 years ago, that couldn't do the journey without stopping to refuel. An EV us the same. You'd even struggle in most Teslas without a top up.

290 ?

Don't know where in Surrey you are but Carlisle from mine in Surrey is 334 miles.

No is the answer to your question.

I would say you'd be charging twice en route if you did motorway speeds in a 40kWh ZOE. (3-3.5 miles per kWh). Plenty of places to stop (check Electric Highway on zap-map)

Maybe once if you traveled 60mph/back roads, but it wouldn't be pleasant.

I have an i3 REx. It "could" do that trip but you'd be stopping a couple of times for a splash and go.
Now, whether you would want to do that trip in an i3 is up to you. If it were my only car I'd have no problem with it but I find the cabin a comfortable place.

Get an EV for everyday life and plan ahead using coupons and deals to rent ICE cars when you need to head to Scotland.

This. My car is in for restoration at the moment and when I need to go long distance I can get a car from Enterprise for less than £100 a week

Sometimes a van is cheaper to hire, if you don't need the seats. If you don't need a car at the other, then taxis?
It seems to me hire cars/vans make their money on the add-ons. I would agree that I believe it is more than 290 miles.

It's about 300-325 miles from the top of Surrey to the bottom of Scotland. You're gonna need at least 1 topup on route. Plus the social shame of being seen in a Zoe.
