I have ordered a new e-golf, against which I intend to trade in my ancient diesel volvo, which qualifies for the £5k scrappage allowance. So far, so good. However, it seems I am not the only one who has had this idea and the original estimated delivery date of Feb next year now seems at risk. To qualify for scrappage the new car has to be delivered by 31.3 and the dealer is being somewhat evasive on what happens if it isnt. Anyone in a similar position who has had a more definitive answer, please?

My tuppence worth: the scrappage scheme isn't government sponsored, it's a manufacturer initiative. If they can't meet their own promises, then they'll have to make good, if you've come to a contract in good faith, then it's down to VW to stick to it.

If they can't meet their own criteria for a registration deadline then they should accommodate any date extension, if you are worried, get onto customer services and say you want an answer as the dealer is being non-committal (probably as they don't actually have anything in writing from VW saying that the registration dead line extension will be extended).

Best-case, they'll honour it. Worst-case they lose the sale.

It might be worth checking a few VW franchises to see if anyone has a cancelled order or build slot you can take.

Also is term delivered by 31.3 or registered by? The latter can buy a little extra time.

They’ve updated the terms online today to say registered by 30.06.18 so clearly they are aware of the supply problems....
