VW's switch to Electric will be spearheaded by their ID project kicked off by a golf sized hatchback, actual market name not yet known.
Last week VW showed off prototypes to a bunch of journo's so expect a few stories this week (including a fully charged episode hopefully) .

Looks wise they have kept it close to the concept car so far , shorter wheelbase, actual wing mirrors, little fatter looking rear, less sloped screen but it looks close enough.
If they can produce enough of them and they meet the efficiency and price points it'll shift plenty. Directly up against the 60kwh leaf, Kona and model 3/Y(eventually ..).

VW have struck a deal with Tesco to install EV chargers at all of their supermarkets. It's only 7Kw but it's free. Enough to get you there and home
Ive started looking at the network and there are 13k sites now and hundreds new 125kw chargers planned for 2019. Polar seems to be the best deal. £8/month and if you plan the trips you can use their sites FOC.

It's going to be an interesting couple of years coming up.
I'm guessing pricing will be starting at the very top of the Golf diesel price bracket (so high 20s) for small battery and basic trim but that would still be a pretty competitive offering.
Wonder how the batteries will price up and what people will think is "enough". I'm pretty sure the smallest would do us absolutely fine.

Im quite sure the lower spec will be sub 25k and the higher specs, 30k. Not sure how the govt incentive will work by that time. They might reduce it. You make an interesting point about which one is best suited. By nature i gravitate towards the better spec but my typical daily is 20 miles and sometimes 30. It's rare that i drive over 100 in 1 day and when i do it can be 400 so I would hope by then there are more fast chargers to top up the battery. I don't mind stopping for 30 mins. I will probably go for the biggest battery on offer if its no more than 30k.

How can having the motor between the rear wheels increase interior space, compared to having it between the front wheels in a space that no-one could sit in?
(transverse fwd platforms exist in order to maximise interior space!)

That doesn't make much sense. The HVAC can literally go anywhere on an EV (because it's powered by it's own HV DC pump) whereas the motor has to go between at least one set of wheels. Putting the motor between the front wheels doesn't take up enough space to mean the HVAC won't fit there, but fitting the motor across between the rear wheels DOES take up cabin space that cannot be used for the HVAC (normally) and that can be used to provide more boot space or more space for rear seat passengers (who's bottom tends to be pretty close to the rear axle centre line)I suspect the car is RWD for the first (single motor) application simply to get better handling and traction, and to maximise on-throttle dynamics (a-la BMS i3, which they have benchmarked exhaustively of course...). I expect dual motor ID-R's to appear at some point, with a motor in each end and 4wd.......

My beef with the current crop of EVs is that they're either way too small/impractical for an active family, or they're stupidly expensive. I don't see any evidence that the I.D. will change this. Judging by the door positions, the car will have a modestly sized boot, but not really any bigger than the current Golf.

How big would a golf size car be??
Its a good entry into the market for VW, it wont quite match the model 3 for range , esp with a quick top up charge, but it should be as cheap or cheaper and appeal to the golf/German fans. VW have always positioned the golf to the group who first bought them way back, this should appeal to them well.

Like I said, I remain to be convinced. The car in the video doesn't look like it has a Passat-sized luggage compartment. I'll happily be proven wrong though.
My issue is that I need something roughly S-Max or (my current car) V90 sized. That leaves me with the Model-S or Model-X, or the I-Pace at a pinch, none of which is under £65,000. Or the E-NV200 which has a comically poor range and a terrifying van chassis (3 NCAP stars).
If they can make something like the Golf R Estate, but electric, I'll snatch their hand off.
