My initial thought was that looks like an ecotricity charger. If it is the same hardware that explains it. Ecotricity chargers have real problems with CCS, especially if the car is low on charge when you plug in. I have used Polar chargers twice and both times it has worked perfectly.

Agree, used Polar for all of my rapid charging and no issues. This kind of issue with the Ecotricity chargers you mention is piss poor though isn't i? The limited number of 50kw chargers about is bad enough without some being problematic.

I popped it on the same charger that failed first time this morning, even though I was on 91%, because I had to go there anyway so figured what the hell.. it wasn't on there for very long but seemed to be ok for the short period that it was on there at any rate. Going to chalk it up to electrical gremlins for the moment.

Strangely the car disappeared from the BMW Connected app randomly this morning, it was prompting me to "Add Vehicle" again, but it already knew the VIN number. Adding it again didn't work either. Logging out and back in to the app restored it though.

By contrast the Evezy app has been solid. Loads quick, responds quickly, barely any different to using a normal key other than the fact that I couldn't lock/unlock it by simply feeling a key in my pocket.

We've had our first issue which rendered the car unusable from about 5 yesterday to just now. Fortunately this was while parked at home.

The app stopped connecting to the car (both for me and my wife) and despite a couple of manual resets of their hardware it wouldn't work.

I got a message from them early this morning to say it had been fixed and after an app reset it is working again.

Was a bit of a pain in the arse but would have been a major issue had the vehicle been away from home.

Wonder if they'll bring it to Scotland?

Same here so assume it must be a BMW system issue, or possibly an app update?

Decided to install the app on my Android phone instead of messing on IOS as everything seems quicker on that. Signed in and the car showed up straight away without re-adding the VIN so no sure what was going on with the IOS app.

Ugh, that sucks. I use mine for commuting so would be pretty inconvenienced if at the end of the day it wouldn't open.

I thought they had the ability to unlock the car remotely if the app was not working or if your phone died?

They do.
It was their device that failed. I did a manual reset and it obviously just took some time to get back working.

edit: one thing to say is that although some of their systems need a bit of work all their staff are unfailingly polite and helpful.

I've got this too - but haven't been able to fix it by logging out, reinstalling the app or restarting the phone. Car still shows on the Connected Drive website though...

Have emailed BMW..

Chargemaster in both cases. 44kW DC CCS. Have not tried the AC Type-2 that's also available.

Just plugged it into another one and it failed after about 6 minutes again. Walked back to car and the display on the charging point said that "charging had stopped due to a vehicle error". I've kicked it off again without removing the cable from the car to see if it will work again.

Not great though, if I can't walk off and leave the car reliably then that doesn't leave a great many options except slower 7.2kW point charging, or home charging. frown

As I stand here in front of the machine it seems to have lasted a bit longer...

Bit late to this post, but.....

The Ecotricity chargers are crap and did this to me (ipace) in the week. Faults the first time, with in the start cycle (every time charging starts). Then they stop randomly after 6-10 minutes. Third time was normally lucky.

Has anyone used one of the chargeable stations that support POLAR PLUS? Is it possible given the card you get isn't tied to your own personal Polar account (where you can add payment details etc)

Anyone tried it?

Sweeeet. I've been avoiding those because I wasn't sure if they'd work.

Incidentally, I did get caught out trying to use a charger at Brislington Park and Ride in Bristol. On Polar & PlugShare it says it's available, but it's run by ChargeYourCar (CYC) and Source West (?) and when I put my Polar card up to it it said "Not authorised". Any thoughts?

Yep, my local Waitrose has a 50kw Polar Plus and have used it 5+ times now for free. smile

Had the i3 for a month now (second payment due tomorrow) and have covered over 1k miles in it so with only one niggle. Anyone else find that reflections from the strange material used for the front of the dash and top of the doors onto the windscreen make it always appear dirty?

i3 is confirmed for collection on the 19th. Gonna run it for a few weeks and all being well I’ll be sending back my Cupra early. Let’s hope it’s a brand new one

Question for anyone that has used a referral code, did they confirm it or did they just take a smaller first payment than expected?

It ought to be brand new since I presume they've had to order a load of them.

No confirmation on referral, just had £50 taken off the first bill.

As above - I'd expect most 120Ah i3's to be brand new or so nearly that you wouldn't notice.

Just got back from a little evening jaunt - arrived home with 15% more battery than I left with and spent no money. LOL

The range calculator on mine is all over the place. I pretty much always drive in ECO PRO, stopped off in Bath earlier and charged to full while I was there. Got back to car and it said the available range was 195 miles. confused

oh I meant I got back with more range than I left with because I stopped for few minutes to try out another local Polar rapid charger. Needed to spend a little while setting up the 1-8 shortcuts anyway which have been meaning to do properly since I got it. Driving an electric car, especially one where you can charge for free, definitely makes going for a drive just for the sake of it more easy to justify.

195 miles sounds about right if you've been doing mainly local trips or if the most recent trip was at steady speeds. On my commute I've been getting about 6 mi/kWh - so multiply that by 37.9kWh useable battery gives 227 miles.

This matches pretty well exactly the 'real-world range' for city driving in mild weather stated here....225 miles.

https://ev-database.uk/car/1145/BMW-i3-120-Ah

I reckon a lot of people who dismiss many current non-Tesla EVs, (previously me included) don't really factor in that you can get way more than the 'average range' real-world figure if, like it is for a lot of people, most of your driving is urban. I reckon people haven't yet really cottoned on to the fact that the energy consumption profile for EVs is basically the opposite of ICE cars - it reduces a lot with urban driving, instead of increasing a lot. So they see the 'average range' and assume it will be worse than that most of the time, when in reality (unless they are up and down motorways every day) it could well be much better than that.
