Slightly dull subject, but I was just wondering how reasonable, or otherwise, insurance was for fast EVs? I test drove a Tesla M3 today and have to say that I was very impressed by much of the car (apart from the interior at the price point compared to a 3 series BMW for example). As delivery is so delayed on the M3 I've started looking at inventory MS cars. Before I start the trawl through the online comparison sites, what sort of quotes have you been getting for a new MS performance? Are they comparable to a supercar (given the performance), or more reasonable?

As always, it depends on your circumstances and as you say, whether you are comparing it to cars with similar performance stats. or just similar pricing. The main companies that seem to be competitive for at least some people are LV, Admiral, Churchill and Novo.

The excesses seem to be quite high, so many people (myself included) buy a separate excess insurance policy from someone like ALA (who offer a discount to PH readers).

It's not a M3P but my i3 is no different insurance wise to any other ICE car I've owned. My experience is that the car's performance has little to do with insurance premiums, mine are always £400-600 regardless of whether it has 150bhp or 500bhp.

LV are brilliant charged me £100 a year less than my AMG for my M3P

I had budgeted on paying double what my merc premium was

try pluginsure, you can get a quick estimate on their website, then give them a ring to take out the policy - very friendly IME. They've been cheapest for my leaf for last 3 years too. I even swapped my 9y ncb out to buy an atom (not insured thru them!) and they gave me an "intro bonus" and it only went up from previous year £50! Just had a quote for a new e-tron and they are cheapest again - £1100, Confused started at £1500 and went up rapidly
