What do we make of the MG5 EV? First estate EV to market and I reckon it’s going to sell in droves.

Building on the success of the ZS. Two trim levels, £24,495 and £26,995. Not sure the higher spec one is worth bothering with.

Brochure: https://mg.co.uk/files/2020-09-39/MG5_EV_Brochure_...

Seems like a decent value proposition although there are some very good deals on the ZS at the moment

I guess it may pick up sales from everywhere for being the first, but estate sales are tiny overall.

I could see fleets buying loads of them though - perfect for taxi use for a start

Ironically I think it would have a better chance of selling if it was under a fresh brand.

The ZS EV seems reasonably well received though, I think they’re carving themselves out a reasonable reputation for electric cars that they haven’t had before.

It looks a little short? Looks more like a hatch back than an estate. Unless they photoshopped their own brochure badly.

ETA: just the 460 litres in the boot with the seats up. Even the pokey C class estate has a bigger boot and cars like the 308 SW are practically cavernous at 660!

The brand is borderline toxic I'd say.

To me, today, it stands for chinese tat with a shiny sticker covering the made in Shenzhen stamp (I've no idea where they're actually made these days). And I'm just about old enough to remember when MG made decent cars.

Do people under 30 have any awareness of the brand at all?

Still, they're the first to being an EV estate to market so they'll sell a few, doubt they'll be a common sight though.

Bigger boot than a typical hatchback but slightly smaller than some estates, doesn’t seem particularly bad really. I guess there’s some space taken by batteries.

That’s about it. I’d rather walk than buy a Chinese car, and MG is just a joke now.

Not sure about the retro analogue speedo but at least it's not such an obvious fossil conversion as the ZS EV.

Don't get me wrong, the ZS EV is a decent car, but when I test drove one it was really apparent that they took the ICE and wedged a (very good) electric drivetrain in it.

I find the analogue gauges in both rather odd in these times (spent last week driving a 2020 VW Tiguan with a digital instrument panel). The one in the 5 does look a lot nicer though.

Looks like a good addition to the market to me. Sure it's not perfect, but there's a limit to what you can expect for the price.

Seems like a bargain for taxi drivers.

I'd judge the car not the brand, seems pretty good at that price.

The only things which really looks worth having on the higher spec model are climate control (as opposed to old-fashioned AC on the lower spec) and heated seats. Not sure it's worth a 10% price hike for those, though.

I'd rather have the fabric seats than the faux-leather ones, too, which is a negative for the higher spec car.

I thought it was the heated seats myself (I don’t see auto climate as essential, you still end up messing around with it in most cars on longer journeys) - neither worth £2500 though.

Yeah I just noticed that and added it. smile

I could (and indeed currently do) live without either.

Agree with you on being anti-pleather. It’s the problem I have with the ZS EV - I want the seats from the Excite and everything else from the Exclusive.

It's a good price. As above boot is a bit small: I'd want the same as my Passat GTE or more, not significantly less. But if it can help drive the price down and spur some other manufacturers to release estate EVs then great!

It’s not a competitor to a Passat in any way, it’s the size of a Golf/Astra estate.

Sure. And that's fine. But this means those wanting a larger family estate need to keep on waiting. Maybe the iD.5 will be the car we want?
