Hi all - I'm hoping to buy an electric car but I don't have off-street parking.

I live on a quiet road so I wondered whether or not a box that connects to the front of my house could be run out onto the street, if I covered the wires?

I believe you have to have off-street parking to qualify for a grant as well? Any idea how they check this?

Check with your local council, some will be more understanding than others. You can cover the cables with cable ramps, and there are a few people who do that, but your council might insist you need a warning sign.

If you don't have off-street parking, you won't qualify for the OLEV grant to install a dedicated charger unfortunately. You might be able to get decent charge rates though if you get an electrician to fit a commando socket and use an Ohme charger. They're cost effective and can charge at up to 7kW which is the same as you would get from a PodPoint or similar.

You can only get a wall charger installed with a grant if you have off street parking. Consider a granny lead, slower but just plug in.

Commando socket is the way to go. Grant aside, most installers will refuse to fit a proper charger if you’re obviously going to trail a cable over a path.

They wouldn’t fit one here and that’s not even an actual pavement.
