My brand new car (leased) was due to be delivered today by Holdcroft Hyundai. A Premium SE full electric Ioniq.

Unfortunately at 2pm, they called to say the front bumper had been ripped off by the transit driver when he was taking another car off for someone else.

To say I was angry would be an understatement... and the attitude from them was "well we've called to let you know, what else do you want us to do?"

Another quick follow up call from the manager said, oh it's not been ripped off it's a scratch and the under tray has come off.

I've asked for images but they've refused saying they are low quality.

My gut is telling me to pull out because I dont like the idea of having a car that's already seen the inside of a body shop delivered to me "as new".

Thoughts and opinions? Anything similar happen to anyone else?

If it had not happened on delivery day you would not have known about it.

It’s a lease car so no financial residual implications for you, just make sure you keep an email stating it was damaged before you got it and forget about it and enjoy your car.

It is only metal and plastic and will cause a short delay before it is delivered. As long as you are indemnified for any problems / costs arising in your and at the end of the lease then it is just a short delay to deal with

If you pull out of the deal, how long will it take to source another? How would you know that hadn’t been in the body shop before you got it if they don’t tell you?

Take both your points on board. Especially the comment about would I have even had known if the damage had occurred before delivery day.

My wife agrees I've over reacted.

Tomorrow I will ask for written details of the damage and images for me to hold for the duration of the lease should any issues arise.

It's reasonably well known that quite a few new cars get damaged in transit and have to be repaired before they are sold/handed over. Likelihood is that a lot of people have no idea. I had a new Monaro back in 2006, it got damaged (badly, by a massive door dent) about a year later and when I went to look at getting it repaired, the bodyshop guy told me that part of the rear quarter had been painted in the past. Not on my watch it hadn't! So must have been pre-delivery.

To bring this threat to a close, I've had contact with the dealer today but no images as of yet.

They have agreed to fully repair, and offered 300.00 compensation, which will be provided when I take ownership of the car.

Seems fair; as that more than covers 1 months rental, and I'll only be without a car for (hopefully) maximum of two weeks.

They have also agreed to provide in writing details of the damage and the repairs carried out, so at the end of the lease should any concerns be raised by the inspecting party about this then I have that to fall back on.

Sounds like a pretty good outcome as long as you can live without the car for two weeks.

A good result!

Most new cars have some form of repair done pre-delivery. Factories, ports, transport hubs... Most have their own on site generic bodyshop.
