I Hyundai ioniq is a bit of a pig though to look at and very low rent inside. Having to explain you aren’t someone’s Uber everytime you stop would also be a pain.
In base white I’d agree and it also doesn’t photograph well. However, pick a decent colour and especially the SE and it’s surprisingly good inside.

Uber’s are always the hybrids. A shame Hyundai didn’t differentiate the pure electric more. Even an “electric” side badge and a bit of blue or green trim would’ve helped.

2nd Point - agreed again, waking up to a constantly full tank and a warm car is a great feeling! Saved 5x 7-10mins on fill ups already and only a few weeks into ownership! Even better, I have not got in it on a Sat AM to do the shopping only to find my better half has coasted home on fumes the night before hehe
This often gets a mention. I use Diesels with 600 - 1000 mile range on one tank of fuel, By picking certain filling stations at certain times I'm in and back out on the road in not much more than 5 mins. On all but the coldest mornings the heater is blowing warm within 5 mins and there's heated seats and steering wheel in the meantime. I'm keen to try an EV and it's accepted to be the way forward but ICE is here for a good while longer yet.
But a pre-heated car will clear ice and windscreen before you get in and those 5 minutes may be your whole journey.

Although you have been able to buy the same functionality for decades for ICE cars via aftermarket, and no reason why manufacturers can't fit them in to ICE but haven't.

And..... you can rag an EV from the get go, no need to warm up you're fluids hehe

Expensive diesel! 16k a year at 45mpg isn't £175 a month, even assuming electricity is free.
More like 42-43mpg real world with 70 miles a day of start-stop traffic on the M42-M5 / Birmingham suburbs. Trip computer always said 50 something and 600 mile range but it was bullst like most of them, only ever got real world 55mpg on a good holiday run. Add £1.20 a litre by us and we were always sticking £40 odd a week in to keep it topped. Only ever dipped in the Covid lows when it was just over a quid. Probably nearer £50 a week a year or so back when it was £1.30+. Traffic like this is where they excel, 80mph outside lane, less so.

Electricity on Octopus *should* be around £20 (have not had a full month yet, only just got new smart meter sorted and 7kw Chargemaster arrives next week), we can charge at work sometimes and have started using the free public chargers while we shop etc.
Similar to my experience. Only downer for me is that I’m often sat parked up in my van engine running to keep cool or warm dependant on season and using it like an office. EV means wrap up better in winter and naked in the summer!

Ha ha, don't know what happened there, deleted my own post!!!!

Yeah, so we just thought, well its £340 a month lease, take off c. £170 savings, and its actually a £170 a month lease if it was ICE. Can't get a basic C1 / Aygo or whatever for that with those miles. We didn't even bother to test drive it, just a case of 'yeah, that'll do, the black one'. It rocked up 6 weeks later, top spec, all the toys you'd ever want.

Obviously we are big advocates and the novelty has not worn off, but back on thread, people who are in the market should go and at least do the 48hr Test Drive Vauxhall thing, makes it far less of a leap of faith.

In case anyone is interested up until march of this year (when lockdown kicked in) we were running 2 cars from https://on.to/electric-cars/

At the time we were paying £399 a month for an i3 120ah which included 12k miles, maintenance, public charging, insurance and 30 day commitment. Prices have gone up a bit but still some interesting cars on the list and offers decent value and little commitent for those that want to try the EV experience.

We off hired the i3 as couldn't justify 2 cars with us both working from home for at least the rest of 2020 but after waiting 7 months for delivery (arrived Dec 2019) the Tesla wasn't going anywhere. smile

This thread is great - it covers a lot of the different solutions we've been looking at.

We're petrolheads, but on the kind of budget that makes it a liability as a life-choice.
Mrs Pedro has recently started a job as a key-worker answering emergency calls at an HQ, which is a 70-mile round trip from home, almost entirely on motorway.
This new reality means that she simply cannot afford to break down on the way to work (it's very much frowned upon), so we need a vehicle whose reliability is (as far as possible) not an issue.

Our current main car is a 2008 Clubman Cooper S, with 100k miles. It cost us around £3.5k and neatly fits our usual compromise of wanting something a little bit interesting, but only being able to afford a little bit interesting if it's older and quite tired. It was bought before the new, serious job and a recent bill for an oil leak suddenly opened our eyes and emptied our pockets. We can't do our usual thing of running it until it breaks, then buying another slightly interesting, but potentially unreliable, car for the same money.

The Mini costs us about £250 a month in petrol plus - we reckon - around £200 per month in all other costs.

Our budget is no bigger than before, so we wanted to know the best way to convert what we have now into a more reliable alternative.

After looking at buying/leasing a whole range of vehicles, we ended up choosing a Corsa-e. I've never liked Vauxhalls, but for our criteria it made sense.

With £2.5k down (roughly the remaining value in the Mini), we can lease a higher spec Corsa-e for 2 years at 20k miles a year for £275/month. We didn't want to commit to more than 2 years as we are hoping we might be able to upgrade by then.
This price was around £50 less than we could find the e-208 that we preferred the look of and £100/month less than the Soul EV that has more toys and bigger range. The Corsa's range is adequate, even allowing for freezing weather and motorway driving and my job helps with cheaper electricity (I work for a green energy company), so the fuel bills are drastically reduced.
There are also chargers at Mrs P's work if the battery level gets a little sketchy.

So we've ordered one. Not even a 48 minute test drive.

Wish us luck.

I've just taken the plunge on a 2yr lease ID.3

We'll still have another petrol car in the family, but the ID.3 will do the bulk of the longer trips (yes, with a bit of planning involved).

Getting an Ohme wall-mount charger for home, and swapping to Octopus GO electricity for the 5p/kwh off-peak, meaning a full battery overnight for well under £5. If we said 200 mile range, i'd be happy with that. Around 7s to 60 and can easily take four adults and a dog in the boot.

I love ICE cars, but we seem to be at the point or very close to where EV's now make a lot of sense.

A couple more years of development and batteries will be giving cars like the ID.3 well over 400 useable miles range, as well as public charging infrastructure improvements.

ID.3R next smile

My ongoing work opportunities changed meaning I had to do 200+ miles per day. Due to financial concerns I early terminated my leased Transit and purchased a brand new Dacia Duster Comfort with the 1.0 Tce and LPG. It is saving me in excess of £100pw. I will go full EV one day though.
