There's a million other SUVs out there, though. The Ioniq was pretty much unique.
Maybe there's a reason for that.

My guess would be that Hyundai made it so low and flat to get the efficiency up, but now that bigger batteries are available at reasonable cost there isn't a need to.
Ioniq the car was their version of the Prius/Insight, but with the full EV option as well as the hybrid and plug in cars. From what I understand, Ioniq is a spin off EV brand now, so there will be other Ioniq cars coming after this https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/ioniq/

Ah that makes sense, so hopefully we will see a proper car come out to replace the old Ioniq fairly soon then. smile

Agreed. At the moment, EV makers can exploit the huge difference in fuel costs compared to ICE cars. They don't really need to try to beat other EVs on low consumption. It's only nerdy types like us/Bjorn/etc that even look at that.

There are so many hi-drag EVs clustering in the middle of the market (family SUV) that hi-efficiency might eventually become a differentiator. Even if Hyundai can't make up it's mind about the current Ioniq having 0.24Cd or 0.25Cd.

I bet the original Honda Insight shape with a modern EV drivertrain would be very efficient.

A chap has done this, 29kWh and it does 180 miles. Pretty cool.

I think it’s a good looking car.

Given how good the other cars in the family are there, it’ll do it’s range while being reliable, good looking and cheap compared to others

Video look around (with cute Korean woman presenting, in Korean) - useful to gauge how big this thing is - not much smaller then the 6 Series GT next to it!

Except that it is?
BMW 6 GT: 509 cm
Hyundai Ioniq 5: 464 cm

That's like saying a C class is not much smaller than an S-class.

The important number is the wheelbase. 3m is just crazy. That is actually not that much smaller than a 6 GT.

Accoring to German magazine 'auto sport und motor' the 800v system in this car is the same as that being used by the Taycan. The technology has been developed by Rimac, which is part owned by both Porsche and Hyundai. Hence I suspect you could get an idea of charging rates / drop-off by looking at what the Taycan is currently delivering.

Personally I find this really interesting. The 800v system was for me the most interesting part of the Taycan and I was looking forward to it filtering through the VAG range. It looks like Hyundai will instead be the one to get it to the wider market.
Could you post a link please? I'm interested to understand what they claim is Rimac's.

The Taycan inverter is from a Korean supplier, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's made its way into Hyundai applications as there's not much mature 800V stuff in the market at the moment.

This is a huge step in EVs. Can't help feeling that the fact it has come from Korea and not Japan is a big sign.

Two things strike me from that video:
1. The wheels are hideous
2. The rear aerodynamics are wrong....look at the rear screen, it’s filthy.

You can tell from the spoiler that they're going for separation at that point rather than trying to achieve laminar air flow over the rear screen. That's just the nature of the SUV/hatchback shape, you're never going to keep the air-flow laminar at speed over a rear window with that rake.

The wheels... meh I think all diamond cut wheels are hideous, personally.

Kia EV6, their version of the Ioniq 5 with the same 800v systems. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/all-new-...

Looks mega on the outside, shame the interior was inspired by the Nintendo SNES
+1. Interior is a complete deal-breaker for me, however good it looks on the outside.

Here we go.

It’s quoted on the German Wikipedia site for the car.

It's a Kammback. Pretty standard aero today.

I don't understand why EVs look like normal cars. Surely they don't need to follow the three box design anymore? I imagined they'd look more like a VW camper: short/ no bonnet, driver sitting above the front wheels to maximise space.

You still need a crash structure...

This, and some are still based on petrol cars like the Kia Soul, so the EV gear replaces the engine. Pure EV cars either have a shorter bonnet (ID.3 to Golf 8) or a 'frunk' (Tesla)

Arguably things like the ID3 have moved in that direction. One thing the manufacturers have to consider is customer expectations, if you radically change the design of what is the norm too quickly, it could put people off.
