The options here are expensive too, genuinely not far from what Porche charge for the same things on a Taycan.
Interesting philosophical point - should an option on a cheap car be cheaper than the same option on an expensive car? The base price of the car makes no difference ot the cost of adding the option (although it may affect the number of units the R&D cost is split over).
I know what you mean, but with Porsche usually accused of gouging prices on the options list I was a little surprised + adding £5k of options to a £85k car has a lot less effect on the 'monthlies' from a % perspective.

Have to see how the lease companies position it I suppose but at the minute there seems to be little confidence in the residual values on EV's (or they are taking the piss as know the current BIK rate makes the cost palatable for many anyway).

Yeah leasing an EV makes absolutely no sense to me at the moment. They have phenominally strong residuals yet more expensive leases than their ICE counterparts.

Do they!? Some of the leases on Ioniq and similar 40kWh cars are pretty damn cheap.

Thing is how long is that going to last. Once new and second hand supply meets demand 2nd hand prices will drop to what we would normally expect, possibly a lot worse at first before bouncing back.

I think second-hand EV demand will out-strip second-hand supply for at least another 10 years.

We got lucky with ours and got in early back in 2019, would be costing us at least 30% more if we signed up for the same car today.

Going back to Hyundai, even the Ioniq hatch with a 38kW battery is £500+ a month or 60% of value lost over 3 years. yikes You'd have to be crazy to pay that IMHO so what's the 5 going to cost?

ETA - Prices seem to be hugely variable on these, much cheaper for short term and low mileages.

You can certainly lease them cheaper from other places than Hyundai but they still seem to be the wrong side of £300 a month for a reasonable mileage.

ETA: That one you've posted looks about as cheap as I've seen, but it's only 5000 miles a year. Who's that with?

Lease Loco deals on the Ioniq look significantly less.

For average milage (8k a year) the cheapest I can see is £270 a month for an Ioniq 38kwh, which is much better than I remember them being I must admit! About the same as a Golf, which I still think seems a bit expensive given how much stronger the Ioniq's residuals will be.

Leasing options, they seem to have all of the cheap deals on these so assume a number of stock cars they want to shift.

We are discussing one of the older EV models with a small battery and 150 miles of real range though. Any of the newer stuff with 200+ miles and you'll struggle to find these kind of deals.

Not sure about this one. I really want to like it bu I'm not overly keen on the pixel/8 bit vibe they're going for. Also those wheels look like they're going to be a nightmare to keep clean.

Yup it's not done for looks or to improve visibility. It's to reduce drag. I'm still not convinced it's worth the cost and complexity, but it's being done for a good reason.
cameras and screens are dirt cheap, 15" HD laptop screens start around £35 retail

at scale i could see it being cheaper to use them than actual wing mirrors, with all the mouldings, glass, motors etc

The Kona is dinky though. The IONIQ 5 is quite a bit smaller than the Jag iPace, Mustang Mach E, Mercedes EQC, Audi ETron for example, none of which are particularly big.

Interesting point. Do these cameras have motors for adjustment, or do they just use a wide-angle lense and change which bit of the image they're out-putting to the screens? Or are they fixed view, which obviously could work because head position doesn't matter for a camera but people do have different preferences for what the mirror shows.

Presumably they also need heaters, etc. as well since they'll be just as prone to icing up as mirrors.

Yeah the Kona is basically Fiesta sized, albeit jacked up a bit.

Kona, 4165mm length
Ioniq 5, 4635mm length
Audi E-Tron, 4986mm length

The Kona is Juke/Mokka/Puma size
The Ioniq 5 is a bit bigger than ID.4, close to Mustang Mach E size.
The E-Tron is just massive hehe

It closely matches the Skoda Enyaq in terms of size, which is perhaps its most obvious competition?

That's the Etron GT you numpty. smile

The full size E- Tron SUV is 4900 so smaller than something like the Q7 or X5 for example. The Q4 Etron is about 4600 so similar to the Ioniq 5 and very much mid sized.

Er, i was in a charging bay and an ETRON hove too besides my i3 and it went dark and the birds went to sleep as it blocked out the sun because it was so enourmous!

It was also big enough to mean that the charging lead didn't reach the charge ports if actually parked in the bay. In the end the owner needed to park at a pretty jaunty angle half on the pavement to make it all work!
