Not posted in this section of the forum for nearly 3 years, which was when I bought a Lexus RX450h, my first foray into alternative fuels albeit only a tentative one.

The Lexus was bought as a second car to save wear and tear on the main one and I had a good few months with it but, due to a bit of ill health coupled with the lockdowns we've experienced, I didn't really get the opportunity to use it to anywhere near it's full potential. In fact, from August 2018 to present, I only managed to cover 3,000 miles which is obviously not how things were meant to go.

I eventually decided that, as the world is slowly starting to open up again, I'd sell the virtually unused Lexus and treat myself to a purely electric vehicle. After quite a bit of research, and an awful lot more frustration, I decided upon a 2019 VW e-Golf. I looked at several, initially just via the usual websites, narrowing it down to main dealers only due to the warranty and safety net I suppose. This may have been a mistake as the car was a bit of a dog to be honest, more about this in another thread as this is not the correct place.

This car won't be doing great mileages, I no longer work, partly due to the aforementioned illness and also being an old git, so I've not got a commute to worry about any more and I have another car for any distance stuff should I need it, so no range anxiety. It's primary usage will be as a shopping cart, just wandering round picking bits and pieces up, so it should hopefully have an easy life which will hopefully compensate for the earlier abuse it seems to have suffered with the previous owner.

I had a wall box fitted on the day the car arrived but the electrician, who is a constant bringer of doom and gloom, decided that several other components also needed upgrading to keep up with regulations. He actually rewired the house himself, though this was 13 years ago, so as well as electric cars not being very common then a few things have changed legislation wise. I'm not sure exactly what had to be amended but my little meter cupboard is now rammed with things I have no idea about.

I'll be experimenting with the charging though am anticipating no more than once a week to maintain a level between 50 - 80% of charge, which will hopefully be sufficient. I last charged it on the day it arrived (Friday 21st May) and it's still on around 65% charge though it's spent most of it's time with me in the garage so far, having a lot of paint correction and being constantly polished to get it something like presentable.

Welcome to the forum.

Curious to hear about the wall box and stuff. Something like an e-golf that doesn't do a lot of miles would be fine with a granny charger I'd say. Any reasons you went for a wall box?

Heh. I've just joined the clan too!
BEVs are way better, and more fun than I was expecting. Enjoy.

Agree that I could use the conventional/slow charger but decided that I'd "future proof" as things have a knack of changing unexpectedly and I may need one at a later stage in life. Not only that but the spark did me a deal on it so it's not cost a lot so far. In fact it hasn't cost anything so far but I will probably end up with a bill at some stage.

I'm liking it so far, mainly the convenience factor and also the stealth mode when sneaking out for a newspaper early doors, especially as I've now learnt how to switch the pedestrian warning/buzzer thing off. wink

Me too. Our Volvo XC40 P8 arrives mid July, so plenty of time to do the research and get the wall box installed.

I joined the EV clan today. A Kona 64kW delivered and currently being charged by the solar panels.
